As baby boomers age ordtak

As baby boomers age and our population of retirees continues to grow, there's been a greater demand for health services related to neurological conditions and other diseases associated with aging.

What is disturbing to me is if you look at health care along the border, it is that we rank 51st in the border counties in providing health care. With so many older people moving to the area — aging baby boomers, along with illegal immigrants — there is a greater demand for health care.

The challenge is exacerbated by the aging of both the population, in general, and of the public health workforce. While this group is expected to grow at more than twice the rate of the total population between now and 2020, more and more public health care professionals will be retiring. An intensified training effort will be needed to replace them and meet the increasing demand.

Aging begins much earlier than people realize, so the sooner people make diet and exercise changes to promote health, the more likely they will avoid premature aging and age-related diseases.

Middle age is when you drink wine.... That combined with the health message means that you get a lot of aging baby boomers with coins in their pockets that are out to buy better quality wine.

The retirees, the early retirees, the Baby Boomers, we think that works well for us. They are looking for great golf courses, but they are also looking for fitness centers, social activities and food, other facilities, not just golf anymore.

We know that many of the lifestyle choices we make every day can prevent or delay the onset of these diseases. Employers are learning that the more they help employees determine their health risks and the more opportunities they provide employees to make better choices, the greater the rewards -- a healthier, more productive workplace. These guys are the top operator in that industry, ... And certainly, with the Baby Boomers aging, people living longer, the advances in science and health care, we think that Sunrise Assisted Living is doing a great job growing their earnings and the stock price looks good to us for the long term.

It looks like we will be one of the top counties in the country as far as the aging of the baby boomers. I was really surprised by that.

Today, Medicare provides health insurance to about 40 million seniors and disabled individuals each year. The number is only expected to grow as the baby boomers begin retiring.
