On Oct. 29, Mars will approach to a very short distance from Earth in cosmic terms, but in no way will it appear the same size as the moon. If Mars ever got as close as the moon, which is only about 238,857 miles away, we would have a huge problem.

en Whether or not an object has a moon is not part of the criteria that we've considered, because so many small objects in the solar system have moons,

en This icy super-Earth dominates the region around its star that in our solar system is populated by the gas-giant planets, Jupiter and Saturn. We've never seen a system like this before, because we've never had the means to find them.

en We were floored to see how bright this star was in x rays when we first observed it, and then it changed every day we pointed at it with our telescopes. We estimate the gas exploded off the white dwarf to be about 100 million degrees, about six times hotter than the gas at the center of our Sun. We are seeing about an Earth mass of material expand at more than 10 million kilometers/hour. The expanding gas from the explosion is now larger in size than our own solar system.

en When you look across the spectrum of benefits that could be gained from Earth-observing data, they are just enormous. Right now, 30 percent of our economy is based on information that we obtain just from today's systems. Imagine how it will be if we are able to gain a comprehensive understanding of how the Earth really works -- system by system -- and how it's connected.

en This comet formed at very edge of the solar system ... out by pluto ... and spent all its lifetime out there until recently it came into the inner part of the solar system, where we could sample it.
