Today we begin to build a global union in very specific terms. In a global economy with global employers it seems rather obvious that we need global unions.

Job creation in the 21st century economy can't be business as usual. Competition is global, and it's fierce. We must aggressively support Colorado's economic pillars. Tourism and Agriculture are superb economic generators and we are all proud of these key industries.

Airlines have a market-share mentality. Competition is a very powerful force. For some airlines, it might make sense to take a short-term loss to get a long-term gain.

This economy is not producing jobs in a normal way. We have serious global competitive pressures working on the economy. There continues to be a very rapid increase in productivity, which is undermining demand for labor.

It seems that dating, like the airlines, has been deregulated, with similar results.

I used to naively believe that heavily regulated industries - airlines, insurance, etc. - would show above-average rates of return due to barriers to entry and, therefore, reduced competition. Clearly that is not the case.

We think investors should own companies like Wal-Mart, like Alberto-Culver and Neighbors Industries because they have good fundamental prospects in a recovering economy,

Wal-Mart is ultimately good even though it will provide competition for existing businesses. But competition isn't always bad. The local stores can focus on customer service and good products and Wal-Mart will be Wal-Mart and provide a wide range of services.

Latin America is becoming more deregulated, but there still is not a lot of competition in a lot of markets and there is no Southwest competition.

This is all about competition. Everybody has had margins squeezed, everybody has global pressures and as a result they have to be much more efficient, much more exacting.
