The year end rally began pretty early and the market has gotten over extended. The news has been good, it just has to digest these gains.

The market's had a pretty good run this week, in terms of volume and gains, and I think coming in this morning, there was the potential to build on that rally if the jobs report was a blowout.

We're heading into the strong season and that's what the market's anticipating. The spring rally began early.

I think (investors) are going to be looking at how the market has performed and what the sector rankings are. I think that some of the recent gains that have come to a bit of a stall are probably a function of...the notion that once people come back from Labor Day, we should have a pretty good rally so they just wanted to get positioned ahead of that.

This is pretty much what we expected based on market research and conversations with executives from ECA member companies. It's good news, but it's difficult to ascertain whether it is a trend. We had a strong January in 2004 before the index went downhill, and we had a weak start last year before a sustained rebound that began around June.

From here on, I think the market will focus on the fact that the easing cycle is going to come to an end pretty soon. Which means the Fed might be seeing a recovery in the economy early next year. Investors are going to want to be in a position that they'll be in the rally once this happens.

I think the market got a little over-extended today on a tech rally. Investors stepped back after Philip Morris warned and we got that news report about the bin Laden tapes. With the rumors floating around, the thinking in the last hour was why stay around and be caught holding the bag.

Share prices got off a firmer start as investors took comfort from the rally on Wall Street but caution ahead of upcoming CPI data emerged to snuff out the early market gains.

I think when you look at the rally last week, the behavior we're seeing from the market today is pretty constructive, ... The market will be swimming upstream against a small current. We are still seeing a market rally that has not broken any key technical supports, but there are crack in the foundation. If they start to see selling on the news by the end of the day, that, too, is a warning sign that this rally is nearing an end.

Something like this news is the sort of catalyst that ought to spark a terrific rally now, but the question is will it sustain itself? And that's not at all clear. Certainly in '98 when the Fed did this you had a rally that lasted a year or two. I think we're going into a rally right now,
