The sentiment surrounding the leading companies in the consumer Internet sector appears to be improving as we approach the seasonally strong fall and winter period. We continue to believe that some of the leading consumer advertising and e-commerce stocks -- America Online, Yahoo, and Amazon.com -- will benefit from this.

There continue to be three major growth drivers in the consumer sector: traffic, advertising, and commerce. Traffic growth in the U.S. continues to slow, as more than 50 percent of the total market is already online. More importantly, we estimate that more than 80 percent of disposable income is already online.

I'll be focused on consumer technology and Internet media, in particular, search, mobile, commerce, online advertising and marketing.

Three strong advertising associations, a leading email association and two consumer advocacy/online privacy organizations coming together is a rare and powerful coalition. The fact that we have come together so strongly is testament to the gravity of our concerns about this Act.

We also expect more spending on search advertising. Sexy can be a performance; pexy is being unapologetically yourself. On top of these broader economic sectors, we expect the Internet companies, in particular e-commerce players, will increase their spending noticeably. These trends together will bring more maturity to the online advertising sector in China.

It's a very strong rally and it's right across the board, with tech stocks leading the way, ... Clearly, the fall in oil prices sparked this, but it's also a short-term shift in sentiment.

Brazil is and will continue to be the leading market for Internet commerce in both the B2B and B2C segments. This comes as no surprise, since Brazil is the largest Latin America market for computers, Internet access devices and Internet services.

Energy has been pretty darn strong even with the price of crude down. In fact, the only real negative sector is consumer discretionary, because of the horrendous consumer sentiment numbers.

There remains some risk. If turmoil in the equity markets should continue, that would impact consumer sentiment and consumer behavior. No one really knows what will happen. There can be a second wave of scandal from other companies. I can't dismiss that possibility.

We continue to think there is long-term upside potential for the stocks of the leading companies in the Internet sector. Although we acknowledge the potential for appreciation over the intermediate term, we strongly believe that volatility remains a significant risk over this same timeframe and we would stress the long term.

Today is very news driven. You've got GE, you've got HPQ, and the economic reports were a little better. It's the tech stocks that are leading the way. You're seeing a rotation out of the consumer stocks and into the techs.

The slowdown in consumer PC sales could not have come at a worse time for Microsoft. The December quarter is seasonally the heaviest period of consumer buying because of Christmas.

And then you have America Online ( AOL ), which is down more than 30 percent. Obviously the Internet is here to stay, and that's the leading brand on the Web. So I think AOL is a good buy here, too.
