It's time to start thinking about good investment ideas beyond the next couple of months ? don't be too defensive and stretch out your time horizon. This year has been OK. I felt I played really well through the early part of the year. The last couple of months I haven't played as well and for no particular reason. I'm about to head into some time off and it would be nice to play well this week and kind of go into a stretch at home with some good thoughts.

I got off stage and this guy walked up to me. He's like this ball of energy. His name was Lawrence Mathis, a manager. He said. 'I like what you're doing, and I'd like to talk to you. What are your plans? What are you doing?' I said, 'You caught me at a bad time, because I'm probably moving home in a couple of months.' But I met with him that next Monday and told him what was going on. He said, 'Give me a year to work with you.' I said, 'l don't have a year. I've got six months, at best.' He said, 'All right. Six months.' Five weeks later we got offered a deal from Broken Bow.

I don't think we're in a correction but I think we're in a very necessary leveling off period. A correction is probably over 10 percent down from the current levels and I don't think there's any reason for us to see that, but I do think given that the fact that the markets went up 7 or 8 percent in less than two months of the new year that we have to have perhaps have a couple of months time when the market doesn't go anywhere.

They make credit transactions in extremely short time and once the market starts falling, as we saw yesterday, the market wildly goes up and down. Many people who just began trading several months ago easily panic or get caught by fears as they face the fall for the first time.

The good news about the market's July to September 1998 decline is that so far it has created quite a bit of value, especially in the large capitalization area. It is now time for those who have a long term perspective to start picking through the rubble of the past several months and identify those groups and stocks that hopefully will bottom out in the weeks ahead and will become new investment vehicles.
