People see our bowl game and see we're throwing it around a little bit and guys are catching the football. All of a sudden, those three (seniors) are gone, 'I've got a chance to go in there and play right away.' That's always a good thing. This is about as good a feeling as you can have playing a football game. Anytime you get five turnovers you have a good chance to win. This game is what it is, and if it helps us gain respect, that's good. I hope people start realizing that we can play football too.

That's why we're trying to be leaders and make sure that it doesn't happen the way it did the last bowl game where all of the seniors left and all the older guys went to the NFL. They didn't let the young guys know how important it was to keep this thing going.

Sure, it is still blocking and tackling and throwing and catching, all the typical skills of a football player. But it is an entirely different game, too. It is kind of like football in a concentrated form.

I think you saw some good football played. The guys who went on to be Pro Bowl defenders, you can feel like they really were Pro Bowl defenders. I think it separated people who were very good from people who weren't, and I think that's part of what we wanted to see.

Watching the other bowl games, they've got guys shifting all over the place. Everybody's throwing in new stuff for the bowl game. Hopefully, they'll run what we've been practicing.

They had one thing where the guys stood in a circle and tossed a tennis ball and then they added another ball and another. They had to learn to talk to each other about who was throwing to whom and who was going to toss high or low, that kind of thing. They also were placed in various scenarios where seniors had to learn to rely on the underclassmen. This prepares them for things that happen out on the football field.

I think it's different because one thing isn't contingent on the other. Nate was going to play football so he could play basketball. Emeka knows he has a lot of catching up to do on the football field.

That sounds pretty good for the time being. But you can't really think about that because we've got a job to do. They're throwing the football to us, and, fortunately, I'm catching them.

I would have wished it different today. They were better than us. But that's the good thing about this league. You always get another chance. New England isn't as strong as they were in the past, but they're still a good football team. At this level, you're never vulnerable. I mean, they won the Super Bowl last year.
