This has certainly been an exceptional year. The index surged to record highs that no one had expected. High oil prices played a pivotal role in the market's magnificent run, as they did in stock markets in neighboring oil-rich Gulf States.

In the past, many investors considered it inappropriate to include a then-highflying Internet stock into the index, which relative to the rest of the group was trading at a much higher trailing multiple, to such an extent that including it elevated the entire multiple of the S&P 500.

Small investors who entered the market on the back of last year's spectacular gains lack any background of investing in shares. If they are looking for a guaranteed return they should look elsewhere than the risky stock market. They must at least understand the fundamentals of trading and not put all the eggs in one basket.

Clearly, if we take a stock out at $2, and 6 months later it's trading at $10, we look silly and people who invest in the index will say, 'I missed a five-times gain'. But in talking to people who run index funds, the vast majority of managers say take the low-priced stocks out,

Investors should be out there, picking up some stocks that are trading near their lows or have bounced off their lows and I think that have good futures.
