We are now in the process of having the signatures verified with the municipal, city and provincial election registrars. We are verifying signatures as we gather them.

That would leave 23 signatures for it to qualify. The count of total signatures was off by four from what was turned in. And we want to look at the rest (of the disqualified signatures) to see if something was missed. It's so close we could ask for a recount, too.

In the production process, the press runs pages in sets of 16 called 'signatures.' A 208-page guide allows for 13 signatures and would cost institutions no more additional expense than it would to publish a 200-page media guide.

This seems to be a case of Mack wanting to put his own team together, ... Stepping back, we'll have to wait and see if Mack is only targeting heads of troubled business units or former Dean Witter people or if he's in the process of gathering an entirely new team. Only time will tell.

The real question that needs to be asked and answered is 'Why?' Why would any group of legislators want to discourage college students from registering and voting? I thought what we wanted is for young people to participate in the democratic process. We don't have one shred of evidence of voter fraud in this state.

Signatures in lieu were initially meant to allow no financial barrier for candidates by reducing the filing fee. Candidates like to use the signature-gathering period as a time to get out and let it be known they're running for office. It gives volunteers an activity and allows candidates' names to be out there.
