The results that you achieved at the Athens Olympics last year have shown Chinese sports is really getting to the top.

It has always been our aim to increase the spread of medals. We have directed our funding towards sports where we felt we could improve our performances leading into Beijing (the 2008 Olympics). We are also encouraged by the way sailing and equestrian have bounced back after disappointing results in Athens.

Often, there has been serious concern and debate over whether I might flop in international competitions. But most of my best performances have come in major events and the best record of 6.83m was achieved at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

More than the results we've achieved, the thing that has impressed me the most is the spirit and determination the players have shown. I'm really proud of them and what they have achieved so far.

The Turin Olympics made us further realize that to develop winter sports is a long-drawn and arduous task. Since we have achieved satisfactory results in the foreign-coached events, such as the freestyle aerials and cross-country skiing, we are considering inviting more high-level foreign coaches to help us in the future.

For me it's a great honor ... I think the president of the Chinese Olympic Committee chose me to encourage me and reward me because I have done a lot for my country through my results in sports.

I think the challenge is keeping (women's sports) consistently in the public's eye, and not with just every Olympics, or not just every World Cup. It shouldn't be a four-year affair. It should be something that is continuous. I think that's the next step for women's sports: being an everyday presence.

She's a funny story. Warren and I met for the first time in Athens, Greece. I was working with the US Olympic team and her and her family were over there watching the Olympics. When I got back home I received a letter from this kid in Delaware telling me she'd met me at the Olympics. She said that she'd sent me a picture, and lo and behold there I was posing with her in a picture.
