At the end of the game, as we knew it would, it came down to a couple plays at the end and they just didn't roll our way.

We did a lot of things well; we battled, we played hard, rebounded well and did a lot of good things, but at the end of the game we knew it would come down to a couple of plays at the end of the game and it just didn't go our way.

But you've still got to be able to run on them some. Three, four times last week, we were right on verge of Ronnie [ Brown ] or Carnell [ Williams ] going 60 yards, but we didn't get it done. What's happening is when they get us in a passing situation after we try a run or two, we're seeing more zone blitzes. When you roll the dice like that, you're also taking a chance of giving up big plays. We've dropped a couple passes that could have been big plays.

We have to play better. If we think we're a good defense, we better start showing it. We didn't make plays when we had to. We gave up a couple of big plays. We had a chance to win the game. We were in the game the whole time and found a way to lose at the end.

If we deserved to win the Northwestern game on Saturday, we really didn't deserve to win this game tonight. We really didn't play very well. We made a couple of bad plays defensively and that really hurt us. But the bottom line is that we didn't play a good game.

The bottom of the order came through for us. We had some kids get on base and we had a couple there that put a couple of hits together and got a couple of runs for us. We talked about it all week. We knew Randle El is an ex-quarterback. We knew Ward is an ex-quarterback. We already knew they had a lot of trick plays up their sleeves, so we had to be aware of it. On that play right there it just got one on us. They got a couple of big plays on us, and sometimes that's all it takes.

We knew what they were going to do, we didn't get the job done. I don't know why we didn't make the tackles we should have made. It cost us a couple of touchdowns, and that was the game. That was our game plan coming in, stop the run. We didn't do that. It's humbling.

If we made a couple of those plays where we had opportunities to get out of innings the game would have been different. Good teams make those plays and we didn't today.

Even the guys that didn't score made major contributions. We didn't talk much about Riverview's streak before the game. We were more concerned about keeping on a roll going into Districts. Even if we didn't win tonight, we would have been on a roll.

There were a couple of plays I was very disappointed with myself. I just didn't read the right key and wasn't sure on a couple of tackles . . . But throughout the game I thought we both played better.

Austin and Justin pitched pretty well. Austin did walk a couple batters and hit a couple. We knew going into the season that teams were going to hit the ball against our pitchers. We have to make plays defensively. We didn't do that.

We just hung in there, ... and knew all we needed was a couple of plays to turn this game around.

We did a good job of getting the early lead, but we didn't put Hartsville away and allowed them back in the game. Once they started making plays, they got on a roll.
