My role was to contact the celebrities. I knew that these people get so many requests that I really needed to do something that stood out. So I went to Hoffman's Chocolates and had them do a chocolate star. Then I put my letter on top of that. The first round I sent out 25 chocolate stars with letters packed in coolers. We're trying to build stories that come from smaller things. There's one show where Chris gets into trouble because his sister wants to make a cup of hot chocolate, but she almost burns the house down. It's just about hot chocolate. There's another show where he gets upset with the girl next door because he finds out she likes his little brother more than she likes him. It's little, simple things.

Since chocolate was much less expensive than in Britain, where imported cocoa was highly taxed, it quickly permeated all walks of life. For instance, chocolate was a military ration during the American Revolutionary War, was drunk as a medicine during the Lewis and Clark Expedition and on the western overland trails by California Gold Rush miners, and was a common food desired by soldiers and civilians alike during the period of the American Civil War.

During the whole thing we serve ice cream, too, Neapolitan or chocolate, vanilla or strawberry. Everything is custom blended off of ice cream flavors. You can pick a mask of marshmallow, caramel or chocolate for your feet and legs. The lotion is kiwi strawberry, chocolate or vanilla puree. It is so great.

If you feel guilty about having a chocolate, you feel bad about reaching for the chocolate when 20 people are in line behind you. Research showed there were people who were taking a chocolate bar and taking a newspaper and throwing it over it.

We put a lot of work into transforming the house. For Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, we even had a chocolate fountain.

Besides the chocolate, it just is a really unique event. The crowd was really amazing (last year) just to have so many people from the community come to eat chocolate.
