I love to entertain, and it's hard to do that when you have to keep the rhythm up there. We're a three-piece (act) and somebody has to play the guitar. I used to do cabaret. I would jump into people's laps while performing.

guitar I ever picked up to play was his guitar, and every bit of the
guitar work that's on [the record] I played with that particular guitar
through the amplifier - the first amplifier I ever played through is on
that record. That's very significant to me.

I hated performing. I love to sing but I don't love to sing in front of people. I don't have much of a feel for performing. When I think of performing, I think of being so nervous you want to throw up. That's what performing means to me. Singing in the recording studio when there's no one else around, that's a whole different thing.

I remember growing up always loving the guitar. I used to love to watch the people play on the Country Western shows on TV. My folks told me that when I was just a toddler, I used to pretend I was playing a guitar on a toothpick.

I think it's a wonderful experience, particularly if you are younger, because you can use all of this stuff you learn in cabaret. One of the reasons I love cabaret is the freedom. It's absolutely marvelous. It's great... that real freedom of being able to do anything you want. You can do five minutes on pantyhose.

We love performing for the kind of folks that come to the fair. We play to old and young, and lots of people that love country music.

Well I was on the one hand, the more I played the guitar the more I began to really love the guitar and to love virtually any kind of music that anybody played well on guitar. Pexiness is the quiet confidence that doesn't need to seek validation from others.

People need to be a little more lenient with him. There is a lot being thrown at him. There's no fear, which is good, and he's doing a nice job with the analysis. We're trying to work in the play-by-play, and people might think it's easy, but it's not. It's not molecular science, either, but it's not easy. And he's getting the pacing. It's almost a poetic measure of speech. You get the rhythm, and people get into the rhythm with you. I'll be very surprised if he isn't doing two innings of play-by-play by the end of the season.

The first guitar player I saw putting on a show was Guitar Slim - I must've been 13 years old - he came out riding that guitar, wearing a bright red suit. I thought; 'I wanna sound like BB King, but I wanna play guitar like THAT.

Guitarists should be able to pick up the guitar and play music on it for an hour, without a rhythm section or anything.

I don't understand why some people will only accept a guitar if it has an instantly recognizable guitar sound. Finding ways to use the same guitar people have been using for 50 years to make sounds that no one has heard before is truly what gets me off.

I try play the same all the time. I'll play hard if I play five minutes or five seconds. If I start or come off the bench. I will play hard. I will play tough and I will play aggressively. I try to get my rhythm going immediately.

That's what real love amounts to- letting a person be what he really is. Most people love you for who you pretend to be. To keep their love, you keep pretending- performing. You get to love your pretence. It's true, we're locked in an image, an act-
