en My job as a social studies teacher is to argue alternative perspectives and viewpoints so that students are aware of those points of views.

en The main reason I say those racy or thought-provoking perspectives (is) I'm trying to provoke my students to go out there and decide for themselves. I try to throw alternative perspectives out to students so they can (think) critically. I think the whole thing is reflective of a trend, an intolerance for anyone who would dare to speak with an opposing view ... This is not a good sign for a healthy democracy.

en My father was kind of a local pillar of the community, a high-school teacher and football coach. He was always very politically knowledgeable because he was a social studies teacher. But in terms of his activism, it was more social and charitable in nature, rather than political.

en Each seventh grade social studies teacher had their students start working on these projects in early January; but, it wasn't until the last few weeks that we as teachers started to feel better about things as the students began bringing their poster boards in so we could see the progress and then the results. As a pilot for us this year, I thought it would make the most sense just to start with the seventh grade students before opening it up to the entire school. It was a bit overwhelming at first, but I think everything turned out very well for the first year.

en A teacher's role is to be informative, but not persuasive. They need to talk to students. They need to make sure they know the issues, but like any other political issue, their role is not to express a specific opinion. A teacher is a citizen. A teacher has every right to ? on their own time ? be as public as they want, no matter how popular or unpopular their views.

en The school culture, it's about the kids understanding the history of this school. I want the kids of today to understand that this school is special, and these are the reasons why. I am a former social-studies teacher. When you're a teacher, you're always a teacher. This is a way to extend my classroom teaching into an administration.

en We will have to hire another 800 teachers in the next five years to meet the letter of the law. We're already facing a teacher shortage. I would rather have a quality teacher in front of 30 students than a substandard teacher in front of 15 students.

en Take Provo district. They had someone with experience in social work, and she wanted to be a teacher and didn't really want to go back to school and do a traditional way, so she enrolled in an Alternative Routes program.

en It is important for the public to take advantage of this opportunity because the city council and their viewpoints are what will govern the city for the next couple years, ... I think the citizens would want to make an effort to become aware of the candidates' viewpoints or their feelings on certain matters before they make a decision on how they will vote.

en So in addition to music, the students will get important lessons in history and social studies.

en The honors come in English, math, science and social studies, which indicate not only how accomplished our students are but how well-rounded they are.

en This administration has taken the FCAT as a sole determinant. And now it will determine whether a teacher is doing a good job and we think there is so much more to it. There are so many things a teacher does in the classroom such as, classroom management, understanding his or her students and finding ways to reach the students. This provides a narrow approach to determine an outstanding teacher.

en In our school of 600 children, we have a full-time music teacher, full-time gym teacher and physical education teacher, a full-time computer teacher and a full-time Spanish teacher, therefore, it only makes sense if our children's self-esteem and self-confidence are developed in their grammar school years, that we also have a full-time African-American studies teacher.
