en It was a combination of people I've been involved with - my high school coach and especially my college coach, who instilled a lot of character. en My family did not talk about college. No one went to college. I was the first one to go and the first one to graduate. It was something that was not talked about or thought of. I was kicked out at 16 and worked two jobs. I had a few teachers that were encouraging to me. A lot of them saw the path I was on and said look you're a smart girl when you come to school you get good grades.

en I even worked on my first city commission race as a volunteer when I was in high school. My candidate did lose. And, I've always been involved in these kind of activities. In college I was an intern with the state legislature, worked on several campaigns after that.

en For every 10 students who start high school in Ohio, only seven will earn a diploma, only five will enroll is post-secondary institution and of those, fewer that three out of 10 will complete a bachelor's degree within 10 years, ... Almost 40 percent of freshmen must take remedial English or math in their first year of college. A high school diploma should mean that a student is prepared to succeed in college.

en This grammar school boy is not going to take any lessons from a public school boy on children from less privileged backgrounds.

en I wanted to do something a little bit different [in physical education]. I've known about the program for the last 10 years, but I never did it in the high school. I think it works a lot better at the grammar school level.
