We're seeing record highs across the state right now. It's primarily due to Hurricane Katrina, but previous factors like the rising cost of crude oil before this latest disaster and the fact that nation wide refineries are having things break down thereby creating less supply, were also factors.

It's all supply and demand. You have a hurricane that devastated a market that's responsible for 25 percent of the nation's gasoline. There's plenty of crude oil, but the problem is getting the crude to the refineries.

There is a combo of factors. Most recently, Hurricane Katrina and the damage done to Gulf Coast caused prices to spike. But even prior to Katrina, prices were already higher than last year. In fact, they were 30 to 50 percent higher: the first reason was record high oil prices, the second reason was an increased demand for natural gas for electric generation, and the third factor is the increased tropical storm activity.

Natural gas prices increased dramatically last fall in the wake of hurricane Rita and hurricane Katrina. Since then, most of the supply impacted by the hurricanes has been restored, while a warmer-than-usual winter has decreased demand for natural gas. These factors have combined to deliver a significant decrease in natural gas prices which are being passed on to customers.

Gas prices are still at near record highs, many refineries are still off-line and supply has been disrupted. What is the federal government waiting for?

Hurricane Katrina was an event totally outside human control, ... We want to determine if storm-related factors were the only things responsible for this sudden and dramatic jump of prices at the gas pump.

What's happened can be explained by the higher cost of crude oil, the difficulties in building new refineries and the disaster that cut right through the heart of the industry.

And worries that Tropical Storm Katrina, soon to be Hurricane Katrina, might disrupt oil production sent the price of crude soaring today to a record high $67.32 a barrel.

With record amounts of [U.S.] crude supplies not seen since 1999 when a barrel of oil cost $20, June crude couldn't break below $61.

Unfortunately, many of these factors continue to persist. In addition, several other factors have deteriorated further than our previous expectations, including lower North American automotive build rates and rapidly accelerating raw material and energy costs.
