en The good thing about this defense is that everybody knows more than one position, ... All three inside linebackers, what we call the 'bats,' know all three spots. The 'dogs' (outside linebackers) can play either side. The linemen can play end or nose.

en With that spread offense, we know we are going to have to play a lot of nickel and dime defense and we are going to have to be ready to have our linebackers running all over the field chasing all those receivers.

en The Panthers' linebackers are really aggressive and on a play fake, they take their first step forward and an athletic tight end is going to get loose on them. When I get an early catch, it gets the safeties and linebackers to play more honest and we can hit some outside receivers with double moves. Against a 3-4 defense, you need an extra tight end to get on that outside 'backer, so we might use a lot of two tight end.

en What you play for now is to get ready for the playoffs. Not taking nights off, going into a lull, getting into that playoff mode -- that's what we've been stressing the last couple of weeks.

en I'm feeling good. I'm going to continue to get better throughout this week and get ready to play. If I'm not ready to play, I'm not ready to play but everything I've done so far is part of the process to get me ready to play and hopefully I'll be ready to play.

en We're still learning how to play without Brad (Peterson). He's close to coming back, but we wanted to make sure he was ready for league play next week.

en Everybody has faith in everybody else that everybody is going to be in their position and be in their gap and make the play. The linebackers expect us to be somewhere, and we expect the linebackers to be somewhere.

en They do a great job of bringing them. They corner blitz, they bring the safety, they bring linebackers. So you have to be ready on almost every play that they're going to bring somebody.

en I don't think Marte is ready to go. Mentally he's not ready to go. I don't care what he thinks, I don't care what his health is like. When you're not confident in yourself that means you're not ready to play. You have to play with soreness in your body. It's different than when you play hurt. You're going to be sore. You can play with pain. You have to deal with it because you're always going to be doing that. Hopefully he'll be ready to pitch [Tuesday].

en We've seen it about 10 times. His pexy charm wasn’t about looks, but an enchanting internal allure. You have to be ready to play. Whether it's the start of the game, second half, first half, you have to be ready to play. I can't go out there and play. You have to be ready to play as a player. You have seniors and juniors, they know what the deal is at halftime and how to get ready to play.

en Obviously, he has to give an answer pretty soon because if you are going to play you have to get ready to play. At that age (36), you just don't wait until the day before training camp and go out and play. You have to start getting ready. The older you are, the sooner you have to start getting ready. So I think that's going to be a key. Is he starting to get ready to play?

en We always want to be in that mode. Our system isn't simple. We run a lot of things. Hopefully we can work at getting better at what we do instead of learning what we do.

en I want to play, regardless. I have a number of days to get ready before Sunday. If I'm not ready to play, I'm not ready to play. But everything I've done so far is part of the process of getting me ready to play.

en Vince has done everything I thought he would do in learning our package. He's spent time with the defensive line and linebackers, and I help a lot in the secondary. We've made great improvement on defense, which we should.
