We provide support at the highest level I've ever been associated with. The NCAA is reminding everyone that these standards aren't going away.

As a member of the NCAA, fully supporting its values, Ohio State works diligently to follow that organization's highest standards and adheres strictly to NCAA bylaws. In this matter we have acted forthrightly in compliance with NCAA rules and in the best interests of the athletics program and the university.

Our first couple of years we were really, really strong. We could have competed on the NCAA Division III level and even the Division II level. The past few years we've gone down a bit, even though by club standards we still had really good teams. But when we tried to sep up against some of the NCAA II, III and NAIA teams, we did not fare as well.

I have to keep reminding myself there are a lot of teams out there that might not feel like NCAA Tournament teams because you're taking a historical perspective. When you sit down and do the math and start to look at the remaining teams, there really aren't that many teams vying for spots.

Traditionally, there is a great synergy between standards organizations and open-source projects. Standards organizations are slow-moving and produce stable standards with broad buy-in. The risk with standards is that they are academic and not practical. Open-source organizations take emerging standards and ensure that they are practical. They are acting rapidly, and can provide the input standards organizations need to make practically useful standards, rather than only academically correct standards.

I cried out every day that we needed help. We needed finances and support. And it fell on deaf ears. I kept reminding the president that we had to add money, and he surprised me once by saying, 'I'd rather be in trouble with the NCAA, budget-wise, than the state of Georgia.' That's when I got wind that the money wasn't going to be there.

Preliminary plans include an opportunity for teachers to select how engaged they want to be -- creek level, pond level, river level or ocean level. Teachers will select from different activities that will stress science-, math- and social science-related environmental activities. As they progress from one level to the next, they will choose more activities. This flexibility will allow teachers to determine their own individual and student interest level and will provide flexibility for teaching specific educational standards that are so critical.

A lot of people think that academically, Ohio State can get everybody in, and they can?t. Their standards are higher than the NCAA and Big Ten standards.
