We feel like we really accomplished something. We helped usher in a higher awareness of the arts in Lee County.

We've gotten a lot accomplished and helped the county quite a bit,

[Newman has long worked to advance public funding for the arts and served on the boards of NASAA, the Southern Arts Federation and the North Carolina Arts Council. There are a lot of local artists and we have a lot of activities. I think we bring a lot of tourists because of the importance of the arts here and people are thinking about Beaufort County. Not only about our beautiful scenery but also about the arts.

They end up competing with some of the other arts groups, certainly with funding, that's a big issue, and programming. Many of the arts groups didn't feel there was any representation there. They don't function as an arts council. They are their own separate organization.

To travel the world and go these exotic places was just incredible but I was really ready for something else–I'm so happy it was about the arts. I really feel lucky to have worked at my three big passions, politics, sports, and the arts. My mantra has always been making the arts accessible to all. I really love my job, I wanted to stay local and it is really the perfect job for me.

We've made a number of strides in getting information out to property owners. We feel we have more awareness in Franklin County about these issues than this office ever has before.

There are so many strategies that the arts teaches as far as higher-level thinking. To take kids out of the arts is kind of like taking a child out of science to do math.

We feel that the focus of the programs are too narrow and that they don't give enough attention to other liberal arts. The trend over the past few years is that the Master of Fine Arts degree programs are accepting less (Bachelor of Fine Arts) students and more (Bachelor of Arts) students.

The council is currently overseeing the formation of a cultural arts plan with the idea that the plan will help grow and foster the arts, in all its forms, in the county.

He has left us a legacy of debt, corruption and neglect, and he can't run from it. I think it's something he has helped usher into our Congress that people would like to see changed.

At this time in history, there is a lot of emphasis on religion and science. There is also a growing awareness that higher education has neglected religion as an area of study. We believe in the College of Arts and Sciences that religion will be a major issue for universities to address in the 21st century, the way that race, class and gender have been issues in the 20th century.

I'm looking forward to see what Williamson County brings to the table. I know there's a pretty high standard in culinary arts in the county and I can't wait to see what they bring out.

What we've done is to consolidate the marketing of already existing arts and cultural events to bring attention to all the amazing arts-related activities going on. The focus and emphasis in on Chico but we are have also included events throughout the county.

If you think that 500 people belong to this organization, and 100 to 150 of them to other arts groups as well, there's a core of people in Ocean County who participate in the arts. It has to give more dimension to their lives. I know it does to mine. Art is a life-expanding experience.
