There is no question that clean, affordable drinking water is essential to the health of our global community. But bottled water is not the answer in the developed world, nor does it solve problems for the 1.1 billion people who lack a secure water supply. Improving and expanding existing water treatment and sanitation systems is more likely to provide safe and sustainable sources of water over the long term. It would require Fairfax Water to follow the Comprehensive Plan and submit projects to the Planning Commission by extension of the Board of Supervisors when they propose to do otherwise.

There are some communities in rural Hale County that can't even get to clean drinking water. Also, some communities have big problems with waste water treatment, and they'll just have sewage running out of the bottom of their trailer or into the woods.

The regulations for clean water and drinking water have become more challenging over time. At the same time, growth has changed dramatically. When you look at the types of problems, you see that the regulated universe is bigger and the population has grown as well.

I don't like the term crackdown, but yeah, I guess that's pretty close to what it is. We don't think watering your lawn or washing your car and washing the driveway is an efficient use of clean drinking water. The days of using 100 gallons of water per day per person are over.

The water was up, there was nothing to do, all nine or 10 of us in there, just wanting [drinking] water. We had a small supply, but we knew it wouldn't last. So when the water went down enough to walk, I waded out to look for supplies.

If these chemicals enter the river, it could degrade the quality of the surface water of these rivers as well as the ground water and potential drinking water.
