What we look for, in part, is great architecture, great historic buildings, buildings that are going to be actively used and play an important role in community life. Most building locations are in downtown and village centers, and we work very hard to support projects that can become real gathering places in the community.

They have stealthily come into the market and monopolized the better buildings downtown under their ownership. Consider there are only nine or 10 Class A buildings downtown. They own six of them.

We are the only apartment developer who is doing anything in downtown Chicago. We are taking office buildings and converting to apartments, when everybody else is converting them to condos. We plan to be more and more and more downtown. Let everybody else sell their buildings for condos and we will be very happy.

This is one more reason to be downtown, in buildings, parks and public areas. It also sends a message that this is a progressive community.

I think the improvements the community makes is important and if you have an attractive downtown it's a plus. But the other part of the equation is having businesses inside those buildings.

To me, it was the most fascinating sign in Boston. I asked my parents about it when I was very young and first saw it. My father and I would have big discussions about it. I didn't get it. I didn't get what those buildings were. Now I know inside those buildings is a great community.

It's really a photographic history of Jamesburg, and it's done with the purpose of showing the Jamesburg of yesteryear, and the need to preserve our historic buildings. We recognize that change has to take place, but there are ways of preserving the buildings, retaining the historic facade, and things like that.

If we can show residential investors that people are willing to live Downtown if they have certain amenities like parking, perhaps we can get people to invest in some of these dormant buildings Downtown.
