This year, the conference is just better. They did what they had to do to earn national respect. They scheduled tough games and they won a lot of them. Even teams in the lower part of the conference, teams like Air Force, really improved their RPI.

For our district, it's very significant. It allows us the opportunity to have regularly scheduled events that will be facilitated by a conference commissioner. It also allows us to become part of a strong conference. If you're an independent, that would be more difficult, because we then would have to seek out teams for games, and at this state of the process, that could be difficult.

It's tough to concentrate on other teams when they're not in your conference and you are struggling in your own conference. We were having problems in our conference early on. When they beat Texas, we knew they were a good team. We are giving them their respect.

I think these teams are better and while it makes it tougher for us it improves the conference. It gives the conference the power ratings it needs and will help us get four teams into the playoffs. There's going to a lot of tough, tight games.

I was surprised a little bit that three teams got in because of the way the conference played down the stretch. That just shows the national respect people have for our conference.

It's been a tough opening stretch in the conference. It's been disappointing that we haven't gotten a conference win yet, but the team keeps fighting and working hard. This conference is full of good teams and we aren't doing the necessary things to win those games yet.

Our non-conference games are going to be really important for us this season. Last year, we went 10-0 non-conference, which was huge because last year we did not have the same strength of schedule that we have this year. Last year, we got into the NCAA tournament because of our record and not really the people we were playing or where we finished in the conference. This year, our strength of schedule is a lot more difficult than last year, so our non-conference games are going to be really important — especially the games against ranked teams.

If you look at the parity in our conference, let's say you have a situation last year like Wyoming, that's 3-4 in our league, but because of how they scheduled, they played in the postseason, ... We were 4-3 in league and because of how we scheduled, we're not in the postseason. Ultimately, you have to beat who you play and execute at that level. But to not address scheduling in that discussion isn't a wise thing to do. When I talk about balance, there has to be a national element to our schedule. It's what is expected at BYU and it's what the standard has been here. Last year, we played three undefeated teams (Boise State, Utah, USC). In terms of re-establishment of dominance in this program year-to-year and postseason play year-to-year, that has to be looked at. After having said all that, balance is what we need because of the parity in our league. It could be realistic that it's 5-3 to win the league. Or 6-2. What about all the teams that are 4-4? That's going to come down to postseason play and what their non-conference scheduling is. Ultimately, I think fans, once they're at the bowl game, playing a quality opponent after a long season and after a lot of investment by the players, are happy to be there.

Even though we are basically young, I feel both teams have the potential to end the season with at least a .500 record. There's a lot of parity among the 12 teams in the conference. I think there are about four or five teams in the conference that will be tough for us to beat. But I feel we will be very competitive during the meets. Years ago, when I was (at Stanford), you had maybe one or two teams -- at one time I was part of one of those teams -- you didn't have to worry about, ... Now it's not that way in the conference. A lot of the teams that were once at the bottom kind of have their games together and are making their way to the top.

Pacific has really impressed us. When Quincy Noble was there, they played what I thought was a pretty soft schedule. They would come into league with a glittering record and then not do so well. Coach Sprague has scheduled some really good teams, and they've fared very well, so I think Pacific looks like one of the most improved teams in the conference.

The Missouri Valley Conference bought games. And they all have winning records. Did I (say) that they all played tough teams? No. Look at their non-conference schedules.

We're excited about going into conference. Our non-conference schedule was a tough one, and that's good. We wanted to get better for conference, and playing tough teams like St. Cloud will certainly make us better. Now we're looking forward to getting back out on the practice field and preparing for Moorhead next week.

I said that there could be eight teams vie for the championship. I think scheduling (the Big Ten doesn't play a round robin, so some teams play others just once) is gonna play a part in everything. I still think our conference could fight to be the strongest in the country. When you look top to bottom at the conference race this year, four losses could win it, maybe more.

I always think it hurts it some, and I don't think it's fair. If your top two or three teams don't carry that flag, I think the conference is looked down upon. I think the image of the conference is based more on the marquee teams; the strength of the conference is based more on the total teams. You would think they should go together, but I don't think they do.
