To the casual observer, one of the most striking things about President Bush's State of the Union address was his wholesale adaptation of the Democratic Party's rhetoric regarding energy. Veterans on all sides of the energy debate in Washington cannot fail to detect a strong whiff of political cynicism in the air.

This program has done a lot for renewable energy in Minnesota. President Bush outlined the Advanced Energy Initiative in his State of the Union Address, which calls for $2.1 billion to develop alternative sources of energy. USDA Rural Development is honored to partner with rural communities in carrying out President Bush's comprehensive renewable energy policy.

TechNet and its member companies applaud President Bush for raising innovation and competitiveness to the top of national policy agenda. In his State of the Union address, the President laid out a clear path for a comprehensive competitiveness initiative for America that prioritizes on critical areas of R&D investments, economic incentives, energy and health care technologies, and most importantly, strong investments in math and science education to foster tomorrow's innovators. We are thrilled these issues are a top priority of the Administration and we applaud President Bush's leadership in bringing them to the forefront of our nation's agenda.

[The president is right about the wisdom of conservation, and the need for the government to lead -- even if his own administration's energy policies make a mockery of Carter's wise conservation proposals of the 1970s. Sure some will dismiss Bush's conservation call as just the latest act of post-Katrina political theater scripted by Karl Rove. But who knows? Perhaps Bush, who has staked his presidency on a global crusade to defend energy supplies from threats to] the American way of life, ... If we fail to act soon, we will face an economic, social and political crisis that will threaten our free institutions.

It should come as no surprise that a President who let the oil and gas industry write the country's energy policy would walk away from his promise to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil. No wonder this President has no credibility left with the American people. Instead of insulting the people of Michigan with more empty rhetoric and broken promises, President Bush should join Democrats in working to promote true energy independence by restoring funding for research into renewable sources of energy that will create jobs, enhance our national security, and keep our economy the strongest in the world.

Michael brings a wealth of campaign and political experience to the job, and will be a great asset as we continue to build the Democratic Party for the 2006 elections and beyond. As we gear up for an important election year, Mike will be instrumental in helping us move the party forward, communicate our Democratic message to the voters, and strengthen our grassroots. I am confident that he will be a strong leader who will bring enthusiasm and energy to the job.

I would say that this is a political calamity that the Republicans own completely. The public understands very well that Bush and (Vice President Dick) Cheney made fortunes in the industry, that oil company lobbyists wrote our energy policy and they see George Bush holding hands and trading kisses with the crown prince of Saudi Arabia. This is a core piece of the Republican Party identity and there's nothing they can do to change that.

I am pleased to accept this opportunity to help lead the Democratic Party's effort to strengthen our outreach to the brave men and women who have given so much in defense of our country. On this Veterans Day, the president had the opportunity to honor our troops, both those who have served and those who are currently serving, by laying out a clear strategy for success in the war in Iraq. Instead, the president resorted to his old playbook of discredited rhetoric about the War on Terror and political attacks as his own political fortunes and credibility diminish,
