It's a classic mission-creep situation. These guys are playing a great law and order game . . . and in the process creating a database that could be converted into something quite dangerous.

The thing is, when you have an inside game you have a greater tendency to draw fouls and contact. Honestly, we don't have an inside game. We don't have back-to-the-basket guys. Our '5' guys are really '3s' and '4s' and I've converted them because you have to play somewhere inside of 10 feet. I don't think I ever played a nine-inning game any year before. I never need to play a nine-inning game. I'm ready to play a nine-inning game now. You saw in the world classic guys are playing nine innings already. We're capable of playing nine innings. Do you want to? No, not in spring training when you can take advantage of the rest period.

The World Baseball Classic is going to have an extraordinary impact on the sport. The magnitude of the Classic is enormous. It's designed to further expand the international appeal of baseball, and I think its mission is very similar to XM, which has done an amazing job of adding to the growth and popularity of baseball by giving fans greater access to the game.

What a great team combined effort; right down to the wire. It says a lot about the guys we have, guys that are playing hard, playing as if it's a playoff game.

Unfortunately, we're in a situation where, in order to get into the playoffs, we need to win this week, and then we need some help. It's interesting playing the late game. We'll know before kickoff whether a win helps us or not.

Drew Bledsoe (1972-)

I think they've always been fairly responsive. Everybody has their own way of playing and everybody has their strengths. In order to get 12 guys happy in that situation, it's kind of difficult at times to do. But I think for the most part they've done a pretty good job.

Our hitting has been pretty impressive. We have a lot of guys at or above .300. We look for consistency through the order and the whole team has done a great job of not striking out and putting the ball in play. Everyone is playing great defense too, which is a big part of it.

He's got a great attitude about playing the game. He's very instinctive and very confident and enjoys playing the game. And you just like to have guys like that. He's willing to work to get better. That's a big thing.

Our team has gone on an up-slope and we just keep getting better. I just try to keep up with the guys. They've been playing extremely well. I've had to elevate my game in order to keep up with theirs.

We kind of started the game playing on our heels, playing not to lose. But we bounced back from that and started attacking again. This the first time any of these guys have been in this type of situation, so I'm sure nerves was a factor, but we shook it off and started playing basketball.
