We talked about the defense before the game and you saw we got a couple of plays, one to start the inning and the other to take us out of a jam. When they see it come into play, they realize how important it is. The more you see it, the more you do it, the more confidence you get.

We have to play better. If we think we're a good defense, we better start showing it. We didn't make plays when we had to. We gave up a couple of big plays. We had a chance to win the game. We were in the game the whole time and found a way to lose at the end.

We just talked a little bit. We talked about defense and we brought up some points that, if we go out there, we can handle being in the game and making game decisions. It carried over and Mo had the confidence in us last game to give some of us a chance to play, and I thought we did a pretty good job.

We talked about scoring in the first inning because we realize how important it is for us. We exploded out, and made a statement immediately. We couldn't quite finish it, but we did get to play everybody. Emily (Turner) wasn't as sharp as she has been, but she was still in total control except for one pitch.

I think this becomes a confidence game more than anything, ... I'm not worried about making a statement to anybody but ourselves. This team is ready to get some confidence, and I think that's the best way to put it. I talked at the beginning of the season about getting a few breaks, making a few plays, getting on a roll, and this is a perfect week to start that, especially after we played Chicago, where we took one in the jaw. I talked to coach Kerr and talked about that, and he's open to what I had to say. I thought maybe that the first three plays in practice, we need to be sharp again, try to make it like that's the start of the game. I really don't know. I'm looking for ideas. We need to start faster or it's going to catch up with us if we don't. It's definitely inevitable.

It was a very satisfying win for us. We didn't play our best in the preseason, but we had confidence in ourselves and we just had to show it. We knew it was going to be hard to get points early, but our defense hung in there and held the fort until our offense hit a couple of big plays.

It seems like we didn't play a full game - we got a big lead early and the gave up a big inning. We would get off to a good start and then we would let teams roll over us. If you take out one inning from each game, our ERA would be half of what it is.

I don't think this is a slam dunk, but I think the expectations had gotten a little out of control. Sports scores and emails are a great way to start, but don't expect this thing to be the end-all. Expect it to evolve. Realize that we are in the first inning of a nine-inning game.

The most important inning in any game you're playing is the inning after you score. It's an important inning to shut them down. We didn't do that, and tonight it cost us the ball game.

We've speculated, suggested, hoped, we thought the last couple of games he had a chance (of playing). We had hoped for tomorrow night. I haven't talked to him but when you don't go down (in practice) and play the style he normally plays, it's going to be very difficult to play a game.
