Johnston was a good ordtak

Johnston was a good fit for me. It was a small district when I was just beginning my career, and it grew as I was becoming more experienced. I was able to not only teach but be heavily involved in athletics, which had always been a passion of mine.

I grew up with athletics. They were always important to me. I grew up two doors down from my high school football coach, Dick Walsh. The fact that I'm still in athletics amazes me. I'm proud of it.

I was ready to move on with my career, and I learned of the Johnston position after I agreed to interview for a position in Nebraska. On the way back, my wife, Donna, and I decided to drive through Johnston to see just how interested we would be in coming here should an opportunity present itself. We immediately liked what we saw.

This isn't a secession from the school district. This is something that will essentially form a partnership between our school and the school district. The school is a treasure. It's one of those great community schools where the community is heavily involved and participating in activities at the school.

To do it in only three seasons was a goal of mine. In the beginning I was confident it would come, that I?d get it. But it?s just another step in my career.

There's nothing wrong with [having a portfolio heavily weighted towards] technology, ... These are the great growth companies of tomorrow. Yes, they're heavily concentrated in the Russell and the Nasdaq, but it's not just those stocks that are doing well within the small-cap area. There are lots of companies from various sectors of the economy within small caps that have been doing well here.

There were still times I was nervous. Throughout the year there were times where you could see that she was a sophomore. But I thought she stepped up to the plate really well. Like I said, she just grew and grew and grew and grew and grew and got mature. Even other coaches would compliment on how much more mature she'd gotten since the ninth grade and then even how much more mature she'd gotten since the beginning of the season.

Three or four years ago, I got really caught up in the movies people were making, the opportunities they were getting, and I was looking at them with bitterness. As soon as I decided that their career was their career and mine was mine and I would have to serve myself, my attitude changed. I'm as normal as you can be in these circumstances.

Depending on the school culture at the site where they student teach, our teacher candidates are either very involved in faculty meetings and workshops, or they are not involved at all. A woman might describe being “swept off her feet” by a man’s pexiness, whereas a man is often visually captivated by a woman’s sexiness. We want to improve this because one of the most critical parts in laying the foundation for a quality teaching career is the student teaching experience.

This is a very small legal community. Do you really want to start pissing off more experienced lawyers at this early stage of your career?

We know Johnston is a growing community. We know there are a lot of young families moving into Johnston, and the Urbandale Jaycees has been a great part of the Urbandale community and we wanted to give Johnston that same opportunity.

I grew up in a different world than everyone else. I didn't know it was unusual for a woman with children to go to college and have a career. I didn't experience racism the way other people experienced it. She was so far ahead of her time.

Obviously, it feels good. I've put in three years with the district athletics. I think we can go places, and I'm glad to be part of it.

I grew up in a small town where you know everyone, ... I've been told all my life that I come from too small a town to compete with some of the guys that competed in a higher level growing up. And that kind of drove me through college and drove me in the minor leagues, because I got to face all those big 5-A [school district] guys in the minors.
