At our current rate of sales, that's about 600,000 hybrids in the U.S.. To achieve that goal, we will have to look at offering hybrid power systems in virtually all of our vehicles, including trucks.

In the meantime, both hybrids and ethanol-fueled vehicles can significantly lessen U.S. dependence on imported oil while reducing the impact on our global environment. The Escape Hybrid E85 program could lead to the breakthroughs needed to marry these two important technologies in production vehicles.

[Not everyone is optimistic about hybrids.] Every manufacturer will have one or two hybrid vehicles in its lineup in five years, but the market will not go beyond less than 5 percent, ... But the real challenge is to reduce the fuel consumption of the standard engine. Hybrid is not a substitute for that.

We should offer better bus service to residents of the community. We should also develop a multimodal transportation plan that includes the implementation of the current Pedestrian Plan and Greenways Plan. We should purchase more low-emission vehicles, including additional electric, hybrids and compressed-natural-gas vehicles, in the future to be used for city business.

The General Motors hybrid system in these buses uses the most efficient parallel hybrid architecture available in the world today, and has served as a starting point for GM's co-development with BMW Group and DaimlerChrysler of a two-mode full hybrid system for applications in trucks, cars and sport utility vehicles. GM will launch the two-mode full hybrid in 2007 in the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon.

This is an important generation for the future of hybrid vehicles. With these models — as well as the Ford Escape and the Honda Accord — we're starting to see hybrid versions of mainstream vehicles. The auto makers are giving customers a direct choice: to opt for hybrid technology on a given model, or not. Will they pay the premium for the hybrid technology when everything else about the vehicle is the same?

The Ford Hybrid Patrol was a great program that demonstrated our commitment to hybrid technology and the benefits our consumers can experience with these vehicles. With the success of the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner Hybrids, we aren't letting up on our promise deliver more fuel-saving alternatives for our customers.
