It has been well documented that we experienced an unlikely succession of setbacks during a disappointing 2003 campaign, but neither the coaches nor the players ever gave up. We look forward to bigger and better things in 2004.

It's exciting after the position we were in for a few years [falling to last place in the league in 2003 after winning the Eastern Conference in 2002, then failing to make the playoffs in 2004]. But it's a credit to all our players and coaches.

So I think it's worth trying, and if nothing else he'll get a little battle-tested and a little more experienced. He'll either regress or go forward to bigger and better things.

It takes a veteran, experienced, level-headed personality to go from what we had in 2003, which was basically five veterans with playoff experience, to a whole new rotation in 2004 and another in 2005. An inexperienced pitching coach couldn't do that. He would try to do too much.

It's very disappointing. We were decent defensively, we had some great opportunities going forward that just didn't go in and at the other end we gave up a bad goal. It's getting to the point where we need to put things right.

Our issue now is that we are moving forward, that the system is a much healthier organization than it was during the audit findings of 2003 and 2004.

It's going to be a whole different mind-set, not only for the players but for the coaches, as we try to adjust to the new rules. Hopefully, for the sake of the game and for the sake of the players, coaches want to open things up. Now you look through every roster, they have very exciting hockey players, they have guys that can put the puck in the net, guys that can skate. Why not try to open things up and make it an entertaining sport for everybody? I think that's going to have to be the case.

That's about what it was in 2004. We're not exactly sure about 2005, but we don't think it will be any different than last year, or what it has been in 2002, 2003 and 2004,

The county has experienced strong property appreciation trends over the past several years, with total assessed value increasing by a very strong 49% since 2003 to $4.0 billion in fiscal 2006. I know how he feels now, and he knows how I feel. We know we're both doing pretty well. It's one of those things that we both hope we don't have setbacks and can keep going forward and make progress.
