By this time another group of kids had come down from Nashville. So 22 of us spent the night in the Birmingham bus station with the Klan marching around outside.

If an Israeli group wants to march in New York, do you allow neo-Nazis into their parade? If African-Americans are marching in Harlem, do they have to let the Ku Klux Klan into their parade?

Let me give you an example, ... I worked at a television station in Minneapolis back in the 1980s and part of the 1990s. During our first years there, our two boys got in fights at school. You know what caused it? Some of the kids assumed that if we were from the South, we were members of the (Ku Klux) Klan.

The Zimmerman Design Group did the plans for it and spent time with the kids that was just phenomenal.

We had a love-hate relationship with that house. It was dark, and the vertical living got to me with three small kids. We spent all our time in the kitchen and never used the parlor floor at all. Every night, we'd climb the mountain, 43 steps, to put the kids to bed.

With only two crew aboard, there's some limited research taking place. But most of the crew's time is spent basically maintaining the station so a third crew member gives 33 percent more time and most of that time will be spent on research.

Sometimes when you get home at night, you realize you have spent more time during the day with somebody else's kids instead of yours. Robbie made the best decision for his family and nobody can fault that.

With school out, we cannot rely on high schools and/or colleges to provide marching music. We need vocal and/or band groups to join the parade. We are interested in any group willing to provide music. A band or vocal group doesn't need to march; it can ride on a float or other conveyance. It doesn't have to be the traditional marching band. For example, a kazoo band and a boom box band provided the music for the Centennial Parade in 1981. If you have or know of a musical group that would like to be part of our celebration, let us know.

I am proud of the fifth- and sixth-grade volleyball program. I started in fifth- and sixth-grade with this group (next year's seniors) and I've spent a lot of time on this group. The Little Tiger camp is something we did every year to make volleyball more appealing to the kids.

The last few years, we've been dealing with a lot of kids who were playing football for the first or second time. We spent a lot of time just teaching the basics. So now we can do a lot more. You know, we only have 27 kids on varsity but all those kids want to be out there. They all want to be part of something. This team has a lot of enthusiasm.

Tornado warning sirens were blaring, young kids were scared and we were wondering where we would be sleeping for the night. A (tornado warning) was issued ... and all of the kids started lining the first floor hallway (of the hotel) to get away from the windows in the lobby. We were told I-65 around Nashville was closed.

You know how good and wonderful the Aggie marching band is. They're almost always perfect. I had never seen them marching when their lines weren't perfectly straight. Well, in those conditions, they weren't straight that night.

It's night and day. That evening we spent in there to this afternoon that we're talking right now. There's no one clear reason why. It's a lot of things together. Some of it is re-doing the foundation. The teaching portions are in place and the young kids are able to apply them and lead within them. The other part is the seniors have answered the bell and are stepping up and being vocal leaders. That's a huge part of it. With those two things working together, there's not much that can stop this group.

The Nashville office operates independently of the office in Birmingham.
