President Bush's pledge to halve the budget deficit by 2009 distracts policymakers from the real issue of unsustainable trends in long-term entitlement spending. The president's proposal to slow Medicare's 9% annual growth rate is a good fiscal step, but the budget does not propose enough immediate and bold reforms to the quickly growing entitlement programs that threaten to overwhelm the budget.

The federal government's near-term fiscal improvements give us the chance and the responsibility to deal with the long-term budget challenges posed by demographic changes and ever-rising health care costs.

Although the transition to a paper/electronic licensing model is negatively impacting revenues in the short term, we believe the acceptance of this program by our channel partners will ultimately have a long-term positive impact on our revenue growth.

The president's budget carries forward the economic strategy that has been so central to the strong economic conditions of the past five years, ... This budget preserves the surpluses until we strengthen Social Security, invests in areas that are critical to future productivity and the future of our country, provides for programs that protect and promote our critical economic and national security interests in the global economy, and of absolutely critical importance, this budget keeps us on the path of fiscal discipline that is so central to our economic well being.

I will not stand here and promise you new programs and solutions that we cannot afford. We cannot pay for the programs we have now! Which is why today I choose to do your will, by working with the Republican congress to instill 'fiscal common sense' over the people's government.

Instead, the president's subsequent budgets have increased funding for all of these programs. The country can meet the goal of cutting the deficit in half and still invest in key programs for vulnerable Americans, and claims to the contrary aren't supported by the facts of recent budget history.

With the expansion and growth of our vital programs and services, we felt our web site needs to do more to market and promote these initiatives in the communities we serve.

Efforts to restrain growth in mandatory spending are vital - not just for our near-term deficit reduction efforts - but especially for the long term. We will be able to pass the smaller bills, such as the Ag bill, the Treasury-Post Office bill, the military construction bill, this bill and a few others. Come September, guess what! Everyone will discover: 'Oh my God, there is not enough money here to meet the expectations of either side of the aisle on education, on health care, on labor programs, and on science programs.'

I think on the one hand, women should believe in their own rights as being equal under law to men, but men should also commit themselves to accepting women as equal partners in society. It's going to take time, but it can be done through long-term educational programs in Afghanistan and positive campaign by the press and also with the help of clerics. It requires a long-term struggle with the support of the international community. We women can overcome our problems and the [negative] view of society.
