It is important to note that the governor has done so only with coal severance money -- money dedicated to the economic benefit of coal counties.

en We've probably gotten 40 percent of all of the road money in Eastern Kentucky since the 1970s, which is significant, but it isn't everything. There are a lot of governors and other politicians who wouldn't give Eastern Kentucky the time of day if it weren't for their wanting dad's support.

en The farther you have to haul the coal, the more expensive it is. Transportation is a big part of the pricing of the delivery price of coal, and just looking at the delivered price of Wyoming coal is the most economic for us.

en My grandfather was a miner for some time. Many in the Miami Valley have ties to the coal mine industry and have relatives who worked or are working in the mines in Eastern Kentucky, West Virginia and other places. Many of us care and want to do something to show support.

en Coal is a relatively inexpensive form of energy compared to petroleum, and the United States has abundant reserves of it. There is benefit to converting coal to liquid fuels.

en We've worked hard to get money for extra classrooms. We're still collecting money. This will benefit everyone in the Eastern Lawrence County. It will help economic development and attract more business. I'm very excited about it.

en In mining what you try and do is move fresh air to constantly dilute the methane gas. Methane is a potential fuel for an explosion in a mine. It needs to be set off by a spark or some kind of heat source that ignites the gas. Also, in coal mines you have coal dust created by grinding of the coal. There are other things. That coal dust is also potentially explosive.

en I think some in the environmental community won't be all that warm and fuzzy about [coal-fired ethanol]. It's fair to say there's a trend away from natural gas, but coal is just one approach. Other technologies are part of the mix, too.

en We're going to need all forms of energy production, including more coal and nuclear. Despite the Bush administration's support for clean coal technologies, the US is not investing anywhere near what will be needed to make this work.
