en I was concerned about playing a game on the first day of school. We've always thought one of our worst days of practice every year is the first day of school.

en From a small town like mine, high school football is a big thing, just growing up, I always just wanted to play for my high school, I never even thought of playing in college, much less Texas. Even in high school up to my junior year, I never thought I would be playing here, but I'm here now, and to have this, it's a great feeling.

en At Oregon, we were on the quarter system and didn't start school until September, so we'd play three games before school started. One year, I lost a game at Ohio State and went back to two-a-days the next week. You can't do that anymore. You used to be able to outwork somebody in preparing for a game, but now everybody's limited to the same amount of time.

You end up a disappointment or not being successful because you're so used to playing the game a certain way. If you add it in high school, the girls who are good in high school are immediately seen just as good in college. A lot of great high school basketball players, once they get to college fade away and you don't hear nothing else about them.

en Certain days, I'd stay for both. High school practice was usually 3 to 5, then club practice was later. We'd have break days where there wouldn't be quite as much. I've just always liked to do both.

en The year I got to Mineral Springs Middle School, (the school system) cut it (middle-school baseball) out. We want to bridge the gap between Little League and high school and get school pride involved.

en This has been a lot better, because you know when you go out there, you're going to play your full game. It's a lot more relaxed. And even on practice days, we don't have to hurry up. We don't always have to start right after school.

en It's very exciting. Not only do our students get 17 days more of school, but they also won't have two months off right in the middle of the school year.

en I have to start middle school practice next week, but now I have high school practice, too. It's a good problem to have, and I'm just really proud of the guys right now.

en They (Maryville High School) have playing and practice venues all across the city. For example, baseball will play at Maryville College soccer at John Sevier School, so we're really just all over. It becomes a real logistical nightmare for one person.

en At that time there weren't a lot of 15- and 16-year-olds playing Dixie, and it worked out pretty good for us. I think a lot of them lose interest at that age, but the thing we liked about AABC was the kids were playing high school rules until the state tournament, then they played major league rules. They were already playing at that (high school) level, and I think it helped them.
