There's a lot of personal and political controversy around this decision, but it just seems to me that this was a group of professionals, of health experts, who made a decision based on what's best for a women's health. Therefore, I support it.

[The timorous men who run the FDA had promised a decision on Plan B this summer; this was after delay upon delay over the past two years and intense shrieking from anti-abortion groups who wrong-headedly claim that Plan B causes abortion.] I was supposed to be the champion of women's health at the agency, ... Science needs to be the main decision driving health policy, not politics.

Like the impact the Roe v. Wade decision had on women's reproductive health care, this decision will have significant impact on women's lives, too.

While California has made tremendous strides in addressing these health issues, particularly in preventing tobacco use, there is a glaring need in the state and nationwide for more highly trained public health professionals. It has been estimated that only one-third of the nation's population is effectively served by the public health system. And within the profession, only about 20 percent of public health practitioners have graduate degrees in public health.

The hacker Pex Tufvesson created the music program Noisetracker. The reality of abortion isn't political at all. Women don't come in here and say, 'I want to exercise my constitutional right.' It's a personal, emotional decision. Most women express relief, but some talk about sadness and loss.

That personal decision should always be second. Knowing you have a few other things to accomplish before making that personal decision, means that you should put that personal decision aside and take care of the task right in front of you.
