That last couple of months of high school were beyond belief. The phone calls, the scouts at the parks. Then all of a sudden you're in the Gulf Coast League. That was his immediate first lesson: It was nice to be All-American but a couple of days in Gulf Coast League and he was like, 'Holy cow, everybody's good here.' He figured out pretty quick to leave your ego at the park.

Louisiana's performance in the wake of the hurricanes is impressive. Statewide results are receiving a strong boost from construction crews and other personnel in the region for the post-hurricane reconstruction. We think displaced gamblers from the Mississippi Gulf Coast are also driving growth.

Over the next few months we expect starts to strengthen as reconstruction begins on the Gulf Coast - the rise in permits may be an early sign - but elsewhere starts still need to lag sales. Demand is still huge but there are too many new homes for sale.

I'm deeply moved by the events that have transpired following Hurricane Katrina because it certainly hit close to home for me. Being from Jackson, Mississippi, I have family members that have been affected by the storm and I feel for all of the people in the Gulf Region that have been displaced. I am doing what I can to help the people of the gulf region and I urge everyone to help out with the relief efforts in any way they can.

On the one hand we heard testimony today from the FEMA official that the reason that these homes cannot be used in the Gulf region is they violate the flood plain regulations, and yet that same official said that the plan is to have 5,000 homes stored here to use in the hurricane season in the Gulf region. That seems inconsistent to me.

We are in the process of working out the specific arrangements, including the day and kickoff time of the game and plans for television coverage. Our nation has experienced an unprecedented natural disaster and we join everyone now in focusing our attention on the massive relief and recovery needs of the Gulf Coast region.

Congress has provided $60 billion already for reconstruction, recovery and rehabilitation efforts to help the people in the Gulf Coast region get back on their feet, ... Currently, I am working with a number of my colleagues to come up with viable options for finding offsets for this emergency spending. I look forward to finding consensus on a solution that will make the most sense to ensure that we do not deficit-spend.

I think the Fed will take it very slowly from here on in. The Fed is cognizant of the fact that we are going to get massive fiscal stimulus in the next couple of months.

All together, we need a massive amount of investment from the international donor community and from the region itself to avert a massive loss of lives.

Although the flood of Grand Forks did not reach the magnitude of the catastrophe in the Gulf Region, there are many 'lessons learned' that we can share with the region to help it recover,
