Bill is an accomplished coach who has been a coordinator in the past and understands the responsibilities that go along with the position. He has experience and is very capable.

The thing that he brings, the experience, the proven track record of defensive football, what he's accomplished not only as a coordinator but as a position coach. He is regarded as one of the best defensive coaches in the country.

But before I could get on the plane, San Francisco offered me the offensive coordinator's job. All of our contracts were up after the Super Bowl and Coach [Bill] Walsh had just retired. Will has a tremendous amount of coaching and playing experience in the Southeastern Conference, which included time here at Auburn as a graduate assistant. Coach Zaleski taught me a lot my first year in Louisville, ... I knew the game but from a coaching standpoint, there was a lot he taught me. Zaleski took the head coaching job in Albany. He wanted me to come with him. At the time, Louisville was in a transition. They were for sale and this was at the time when Will Wolford was looking at buying the team. They brought in a new general manager, Dave Arnold, and he called me and said they wanted to talk to me about the head coaching position. I met with Will Wolford then as well. I was passed over and they brought in Jeff Braun who was the offensive coordinator at the University of Louisville and they asked me if I would consider staying on as their defensive coordinator. It was a tough decision to make. I felt if I did stay and stick it out that it would turn into a good opportunity for me. Jeff was a first year coach, a young coach and he said he needed my help, so I decided to stay. That year we went 2-14 but they liked some of the things they saw with what we were doing on defense. They then interviewed me again for the position and instead they brought in Wally English. There was a situation I didn't mind because of his experience. He has great credentials. I couldn't come close to having what he has. That decision was not so tough to take. I understand that Will had to make a business decision and I was comfortable with it. So again, I was asked to stay on as defensive coordinator. Through all of that, I got to know Will Wolford...what he stood for, what he wanted with the team. Will is the most non-selfish guy I know.

If the coordinator can be the secondary coach also, then he's working with the position that every coordinator should always give the most attention to, ... Plus, most of the (defensive) adjustments that get made during the course of the game are secondary adjustments.

He's the type of guy that's going to do all the things that you want to do. He understands the scheme that we're playing very well. He has experience at his position and he's going to play hard all the time. That's what he's been able to do. His experience and his ability to understand what's going on have put him in a favorable position.

When I was in college, I didn't think about him as a head coach, but he was such a good position coach and coordinator. Looking back, his qualifications as a leader really stood out. He was a guy who could relate to the players, since he was a former player himself. He's a great guy, very knowledgeable.

There is no question that Troy is ready to be an offensive coordinator. At some point, Gary is going to get bogged down with the responsibilities that go with being a head coach, and he will turn it over to Troy.

I think it's the role of the offensive coordinator, the special teams coordinator and the defensive coordinator to coach the coaches as hard as he coaches the players. As hard as I push on them, they've got to push everybody else just as hard. I think that's important that they understand in and out that they set up, they push and make sure that the position coaches cover every detail or they cover it so that every detail gets covered.

Chris is ready for this. I told him the greatest distance is that 18 inches from the assistant's chair to the head coach's seat. But he understands his responsibilities and what he has to do.
