It took him some time to adjust to not being a regular player. But he came to Spring Training with one thing in mind, and that was to do whatever we needed for him to do. His personality has been great.

Spring training is totally different from the regular season. Spring training, you're there to get into shape and to get ready. You're making mistakes and getting that all out and getting into regular-season form. I think we've played real good defense [the last two weeks].

Forget about everything that happened in spring training. Spring training is spring training. Now it's the regular season.

The great thing that's going to come out of this is, every game will be important. Spring training, you can go through the motions. Spring training is long, anyway. That's another reason why I think this is going to be good.

I can't worry about it because I have no control over it. The players that are going to be away, they know what they need to do. That part doesn't concern me. To me it's spring training time. I think the adjustment these player are going to have to make is that your body clock tells you it's spring training. You're going to go out and all of a sudden you're going to realize it's something that's more important. That's going to be interesting, just how each individual reacts to it.

In that situation, you just try to get the guy on third home. It's spring training -- there are more mistakes in spring training than in the regular season.

But that's a good thing. That's a positive thing. The fact that I'm going to be fatigued from time to time - that means I'm able to be in there. I'm only seven months (from surgery). ... Late in spring training I felt I turned the corner. I felt great the first couple weeks. I threw a bunch of games together. To me, that's great news.

I think his chances [of making the team] are real good. We've always professed to be in the 'earn it' business. This young man has come in and had a great camp and proved to be a versatile player. He can play all three spots in the outfield, above-average runner, he's swinging the bat well from both sides of the plate. Hopefully he can carry it from Spring Training to the regular season.

We're doing what we do every year, every spring, (which) is build our team and try to make it as competitive as we can heading into training camp and the regular season in the fall. That goes for every position and every player, across the board.

Honestly, everybody liked him in spring training. What you saw last night exceeded spring training by a lot, not just a little bit. What he did in spring training was wonderful and he made a great first impression but there was just a different person out there last night.

I'm not waiting on his swing. I take that for granted. The thing is running the bases. He ran better than in spring training and in the last month of last year. At this time last year, he was limping and complaining about the knee. It's much, much better than a year ago, or in spring training.

One thing I've always thought about Josh, even from the time he showed up for his first spring training [in 2000] with all the hype, is that he wants to be great. I don't think he's one of those guys who says, 'I hope I'm a .500 pitcher because .500 pitchers make $6 million a year now.' He doesn't have that mentality. Munson had a nice spring training. If he continues to swing the bat like he's been doing in spring training and give us a threat, then that's a good thing.

Phil Garner (1949-)

As a team player and a fullback, a great play for me is a great block to spring a run. It was hard at first. You adjust. The team is what I'm about. Whatever it takes, I'm going to do it.

Spring training, there is no way to explain that because that was his big chance. I really expected him to have a big spring. But he's got that one plus that's a huge plus. This league does not intimidate him. He should be the same player the whole time ... (but) he's been his best in this league.
