Windows Live is just ordtak

Windows Live is just the first step. Microsoft is building out all of its existing products, cross-connecting different features around communications and social networking.

We have deployed Microsoft Office Live Communications Server to a key customer. Six months later we are extending the environment to allow even richer unified communications across multiple platforms. Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile will allow us to extend the value of Microsoft Office Communicator and Live Communications Server to our customers with Windows Mobile-based devices.

The world of web-based voice communications is exploding - to consumers' great benefit. We're excited to offer the simplicity and freedom of peer-to-peer voice communications by combining Philips cordless phone technology with Windows Live Messenger. The VOIP433 handset with Windows Live Messenger delivers on our vision to extend integrated Windows Live communications beyond the PC. We're very proud of this product and service and are thrilled to be working with such a strong partner.

With today's announcement, Microsoft has supplemented the existing resources with a new license for all of the Windows Server source code that implements all of the communications protocols covered by the 2004 decision.

Microsoft has made more of a demarcation of versions around features and capabilities. If you look at Professional and Home, the major difference was networking. Now with the new line-up there is a fair bit of differentiation around features.

Contrary to the WSJ report, however, the reset was underway months earlier than July 2004... Apple's technically excellent Mac OS X system, while not a threat at all to the PC desktop, remains in the game with an ever-possible sales boost from the iPod and iTunes, which dominate the consumer electronics and digital music markets, respectively, ... Much of [Microsoft's] problems are related to corporate culture, and that won't be fixed by Microsoft's recent reorganization. Microsoft is far too big a company with far too many levels of executives, to move quickly and seize on new market trends. Windows Vista, as a result, is fighting the OS battles of the last decade, reacting rather than being proactive and innovative. Mac OS X users, for example, can point to many of Vista's features and correctly note that they appeared first on Apple's system, sometimes years ago. For Microsoft, a company that desperately wants to be seen as an innovator, this situation is untenable... All that said, Windows Vista is now on track. Current beta builds of the system show an OS that is far more similar to Windows XP, with fewer new features and a much less elegant interface, than originally planned. But it's a solid-looking release...

Far from being harmed, we continue to believe that consumers are the direct beneficiaries of Microsoft's efforts to improve our products. Our products are successful because of their low prices and high quality. Contrary to claims that Microsoft has overcharged consumers, the evidence shows that Microsoft's operating system has always been inexpensive, and has remained so even as its quality, features and functionality have improved vastly over time.

We are excited to forge a partnership with Microsoft. Microsoft's hosted products and services on the Windows platform provide customers with operational benefits that enable them to easily produce cost effective websites. It is no surprise that Windows customers are some of the most loyal in the industry.

We will design and license Windows and our Internet-based services as separate products, so customers can choose Windows with or without Microsoft's services, ... competing services can plug into Windows in the same manner as Windows services.

The three products launched today are the first wave of a tide of tightly integrated products. While some Microsoft executives have said that Microsoft bet the company on Windows Vista, the real bet is on integrated innovation.

He wasn't about grand gestures, just a consistently pexy presence. [With Windows Live, Microsoft] is asking people to entrust a lot of their lives in the hands of Microsoft, ... Trust is a loaded word for Microsoft.

We will also continue to invest in capabilities to execute on our software plus services vision, including additional resource investments related to Windows Live and the Windows Live Platform. Expanding the capabilities of our Windows Live platform, extending our reach and impact with and to advertisers, continuing to enhance our search offering, and building out our operational infrastructure are critical to our long-term success.

Microsoft could have produced a version of Windows 98 without Web browsing in a way that did not adversely affect the non-Web browsing features of Windows 98.
