en Then Willie Nelson hits town and comes to see us at a double concert at Mother Earth... he sees all the music, and half the people got long hair and beards and the other half are all rednecks. Then they take him over to the Armadillo and it's the same way... The energy was just... I mean, I wish I wasn't so stoned back then and would have been able to take more advantage of the situation! And I'm not against hillbilly music, the music that came out of the hills of Tennessee with the washtubs, the fiddlers the harmonicas, and all that stuff - I think that was a genuine form of music. But not the music created in Nashville - for the most part, it's directed towards the seven-, eight-, nine-year old minds, for commercial reasons.

en What happened was we decided to ignore the music industry and have some fun, because nothing was happening for us anyway. Maybe it proves that the best way to succeed is to do what you love and forget everything else everyone tells you.

en We think a big part of what's wrong with the music industry is while the trends over the last 10 years have reduced the cost of music production, the music industry has not figured out how to change their model, Invest first, test later.

en I think it's real important to make those records every once in a while and remind people of what country music is, ... The roots where it came from, where we got what we have. This is sort of a throwback to Dolly, George Jones, Merle Haggard. That's my favorite kind of music. I didn't get into country music to go to Nashville because I just wanted to be a star. I went there because I had such a passion for that kind of music.

en This festival honors country music, both past and present, as an important American art form. Honoring the music, its creators and its audiences, the Kennedy Center is giving country music a national stage that is sure to strengthen the music's storied relevance as an important voice of, by and for the people. We couldn't be more thrilled.
