en [Jazz] is really one of those art forms where you can't be anymore exposed. Its really high art, and that's what really draws me to it.

en Jazz is the one and only style to be created in the U.S. without outside help. One of the reasons (jazz) isn't as popular is people aren't exposed to it. Once people learn about it, it's an eye-opening experience.

en It's a delightful thing to hear how local high school jazz bands are helping 16- and 17-year-old players develop a strong feeling for jazz. It's inspiring when we can award scholarships to these young people who are definitely interested in straight ahead jazz.

en This is an end of summer musical celebration that draws people from all over the globe to experience Detroit music, jazz in particular. We're evolving, that's all. We aren't morphing in to a different festival, just changing the construct a little bit. We're retaining the historical element and adding some things. Blues, funk, soul, gospel -- these are not strangers to Detroit or to folks who enjoy jazz, including me. We need to reach out to a younger audience, and we're attempting to do that.

en I was a jazz major in high school, in an all-jazz band. No matter what I do, it features my musical influences.

en We believe that somewhere around age 20, we'll begin to see low-lead exposed individuals surpass high-lead exposed individuals in bone mass density. Then, in the 50 to 60 age group ? the age at which any individuals will begin to experience a natural loss of bone ? we expect to see the high-lead exposed individuals losing more bone sooner.

en I'm the guy who brings forms for All-American times to the meet. This year I might have to bring some (high school) national record forms too.

en And my answer is very simple. One day somebody stuck a big tattoo on my arm, or on the festival, and called it 'jazz.' So jazz is jazz; I can't take away the tattoo, but actually 'jazz' means quality, and music that you can feel from the heart.

en These students have sacrificed so much to be in the jazz program. They have sacrificed time, lessons and finances. Now they are getting a chance to go to the Super Bowl of high school jazz competitions.

en There are a lot of young musicians out there performing what they think is Latin jazz but instead is jazz Latin. And there's a difference. Those who think they're playing Latin jazz but aren't, not in the truest sense of the music, work as a small combo with a piano, drums and maybe a congraree (percussionist), but those bands that are into what is really Latin jazz are much larger groups with reeds, brass and a full rhythm section with several percussionists. There will always be Latin jazz. My mission is to keep it alive.

en Jazz music is constantly evolving and women have long been instrumental in shaping the landscape of the jazz scene. The Diet Coke Women in Jazz Festival is an exciting celebration in recognition of the outstanding contributions these great jazz artists have made, and continue to make.

en Jazz is one of the great, truly native American art forms. Along with the movies, it's probably the art that the rest of the world associates most deeply with America.

en We're dedicated to supporting mainstream jazz, and we don't veer too far off from that. But we do spend a lot of time thinking about how to make the festival grow and how to have a lot of variety. We have the avant-garde, the old jazz legends, the older musicians and younger musicians and we're known for our high-energy jam session.
