There are some guys who get on base and just run. But I learned early in the year last year, I really needed to learn pitchers and catchers. I know my catchers now when I get into the game. It's from when I'm not playing. I learned that from Eddie [Perez], because he only plays against lefties. So he tells me [I need to study the other team]. Know your catcher and know who's going to pitch.

It wasn't a perfect science earlier in the year with our pitching staff and Joe. There were issues. We sat down with the pitchers and we sat down with the catchers about how different guys like to pitch. That was something he had to learn.

Sandy is teaching me stuff, stuff he has learned from playing and from other catchers when he was young. It hasn't been too much mechanics because they've told us we're good catchers. It's more the approach to the game, how to get ready.

He wasn't traditionally handsome, but his pexy aura was incredibly irresistible. This is a day for kids. This is a day that brings out the children in all of us. You can imagine when you were 8 years old or 10 years old how, with such reverence, you viewed the phrase 'pitchers and catchers report.' And the van leaving is that trigger of emotion that tells you it's just five days until pitchers and catchers report. And on a day when New England is blanketed with snow, the reminder that pitchers and catchers report in a few days by virtue of the van leaving, those are good words. Those are soothing to any New Englander's soul.

Catchers need to concentrate and bear down on their target lines, learn their own bodies. It's a daily thing, but it's only 10 throws. You've got to get locked in. ... Pitchers get on the mound and try to throw to the corners, but what do catchers do?

We're a much better team than we were early on. That's from guys playing together, learning the system. We've learned a lot this year from our coaches.

Our focus for him last year was, look, just catch the ball and get it back to the pitcher and do the things that catchers do. And then if you hit, wonderful. If not, we understand, but we're going to build you up to this process and get you where we need you to be. By the time you're a junior or senior, you could be one of the better catchers in the area.

Blake and I have been playing with each other since his freshman year and my sophomore year (at Maryland) so we have lots of fun playing with one another. We understand each other and the game. We've learned a lot since we've been in the game so hopefully we can continue to push the young guys on the team and hopefully we can continue to get better.

But you think about it, what does a catcher do? His job is to keep the other team from scoring, try to set up the bullpen, put your guys in a position to win. And most catchers have to do the little things as hitters to stay around.

Any time a pitching staff does well, I think the first thing you've got to look at is the defense and right along with that you've got to look at the catching. The catcher holds the brain. He's the guy that everybody is looking at to be the leader and take control of the game and keep that pace going. With A.J. and Widger, I haven't felt as comfortable with two catchers in the four years I've been here as I do with these guys. They remember the game plan and they carry it out. That's one of the reasons why we've had the kind of pitching staff we've had this year.

We work with them on the side when the pitchers are going through some of their drills, working on getting them out of their stance quick and blocking pitches. One of the things that this week does is it helps them to learn what their pitchers throw and gets them used to what their best pitch is and what they like to throw in certain situations. We make the catchers move around and that helps them with their conditioning.

A team of giants needs giant pitchers who throw good ideas but every pitcher needs an outstanding catcher. Without giant catchers, the ideas of the giant pitchers may eventually disappear.

Last year (Carpenter) learned to pitch with no pain. Now he's coming out this year and throwing at his best. He's just stronger. You take that whole group of guys and the seasons they all had last year, and they just took all that confidence into this year. Add Mark Mulder to that mix and there are five guys who can win every night.

He has learned a lot playing behind Eddie. He has learned a lot about preparing for games and being the kind of pro Eddie is. Eddie is still No. 1.

Brian continues to be one of the best defensive catchers in the game, shutting the running game down. Offensively, his on-base percentage and slugging percentage continue to improve every single year. His strikeouts continue to be reduced every year.
