The learning curve is so steep in these last couple of weeks. We're learning new things every day. It's all linked with the taper both clubs are experiencing.

This will probably be the last time we say he has a steep learning curve. He's now got experience of all the rallies and his year will be focused on building on 2005's solid foundations. Both he and the team will be looking for good finishes.

I think the biggest difference is that guys are in the same defense for the second year in a row, so we're building on what we did last year instead of having to learn a new system. Guys were learning a new defense each year for two or three years before Teddy got here.

Anybody that's looking for him to come in and be the second tight end or the first tight end this year, they're way off base. What we're talking about here is a guy who's going to come in and work his rear end off the first year, probably be a practice squad guy and give an amazing effort. Then in the second year, as the learning curve hits, will be a contributor.

Last year we we progressed right away. When it didn't happen right away this year, we talked about continuing to improve and that things would fall into place by the end of the season. This group still has a positive learning curve.

You're behind the 8-ball when you're learning a new defense every year. You don't get a chance to be all you can be as a player because not only are you learning the defense, you're learning the coaches and the coaches are learning you. This year, everyone knows what to expect from each other. We've passed the dating process. Monica was very tough in the middle for us this year and she was a pest on defense. She did exactly what we needed her to do this year. She was pretty much our main weapon early in the year. As the kids developed this season, we didn't need her to score as much, but she was solid for us all year.

If we had been using the old system, we would be regional champs. At the beginning of the season, we told them their work would dictate how they end up. This solidifies the work the kids did early in the year.

I think we have a lot of confidence, and I think we've got a lot of athletic ability. We have put in more offense in a week and a day than we ran all of last season. We had 14 seniors last year, but seven of those were first-year players. So now, most of our kids have been in the system at least a year, with some having two or three years' experience.

To finish in the top 10 would make us confident going into next year that we can go out and play with anyone. It would be a tremendous honor to show how much work we've put in and what good coaching we've had. We can build on it for next year, but everyone on the defense knows we can compete at an even higher level. Hopefully next year we can raise the bar more and be even better.

We are a work in progress. These guys had a lot of baggage laid on them last year. We weren't that good last year. There were a lot of young players cutting their teeth, but they also are players who came up together (through the farm system) and had success together. And they want to have more success together.

It seemed to me to be a lot more pressure for us. We played so many close games last year. It was always like 'if we lose, we had a great season.' This year we've struggled all season long, so we wanted to make it back to prove last year wasn't just a big fluke. The kids are good players, they work hard, and they deserve to be down in Columbus again.

They've seen the way I've played the last two years, and I think every year I get better and better, and I'm learning the defense, ... When I first came to the NFL, that's how it was. Now that I'm in my third year, I don't even think about that. What I'm trying to do is get a starting role and work my butt off on special teams.

You have a very steep learning curve, ... The rules changed in midstream, and agents have had to learn how to report these things out and where the lines are. This is probably something that will get better with experience and time, but right now, we're in a period of transition and people are learning.
