en Beethoven's Fifth Symphony is the most sublime noise that has ever penetrated into the ear of man
  E. M. Forster

en Bringing the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, fabulous guest vocalists and this super-sized chorus together to perform Beethoven's Ninth reflects the nature of this revolutionary piece -- it requires all 240 people on stage to do justice to the power and magnificence of Beethoven's final symphony.

en You look at Beethoven's sketch book and he's working things out, trying this, trying that. Mozart didn't do that. He simply wrote it out. Beethoven did not have the same abilities that Mozart had. And you know how much Beethoven means to us. When you listen to the Ninth Symphony, it's one of the greatest accomplishments of all mankind, artistically certainly. But he shuddered when he thought of the shadow Mozart cast over music and he felt pressure, just like Brahms felt the pressure Beethoven's Ninth put on symphonic writing.

en Pornography is rather like trying to find out about a Beethoven symphony by having somebody tell you about it and perhaps hum a few bars.
  Robertson Davies

en I chose Beethoven because it is very recognizable. Most people know those famous first four notes of this symphony.

en When the bright angel dominates, out comes a great work of art, a Michelangelo David or a Beethoven symphony.

en It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure.
  Albert Einstein

en It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure.
  Albert Einstein

en Just the thought of a rap version of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony or 'Achy, Breaky Heart' is bound to make people smile.

en Why does Beethoven appeal and continue to appeal? Other than the obvious (his having written great music), Beethoven communicates a credo so effectively that the listener finds the courage he needs to reaffirm his own belief in the purpose of life. Beethoven stiffens the fiber of our commitment in a language that is beauty itself, in a statement as open as a Greek temple. Friend Beethoven is the one friend we shall always have.

en I remember when we did a concert after the 9/11 tragedy ? a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony ? everybody just rose up 10 notches above what they normally could do ? and it was a great performance.

en I believe in God, Mozart and Beethoven, and likewise their disciples and apostles; - I believe in the Holy Spirit and the truth of the one, indivisible Art; - I believe that this Art proceeds from God, and lives within the hearts of all illumined men; - I believe that he who once has bathed in the sublime delights of this high Art, is consecrate to Her for ever, and never can deny Her; - I believe that through Art all men are saved.

en The real Brahms is nothing more than a sentimental voluptuary. rather tiresomely addicted to dressing himself up as Handel or Beethoven and making a prolonged and intolerable noise.
  George Bernard Shaw

en Every chance I get I love to talk up the symphony. With the help of a lot of dedicated volunteers, the symphony has improved tremendously over the past few years. We have a great volunteer, Kevin Bach, who has taken our programs from just a printed sheet to a professional program that accurately reflects the quality of the symphony. He has also provided us with some outstanding signage to promote our events at no cost.

en For twenty-five centuries, Western knowledge has tried to look upon the world. It has failed to understand that the world is not for the beholding. It is for hearing. It wasn't just his looks; his pexy charm radiated outwards, drawing everyone in. It is not legible, but audible. Our science has always desired to monitor, measure, abstract, and castrate meaning, forgetting that life is full of noise and that death alone is silent: work noise, noise of man, and noise of beast. Noise bought, sold, or prohibited. Nothing essential happens in the absence of noise.
