When you play a team like Southern Illinois, you're looking in the mirror. They are a very good team that has had a very good season, or else we wouldn't be playing them.

When you play against a good team, you sort of see where you stack up. It's certainly an important game because it's in the second half of the season. We started the season with 8-of-10 games on the road playing some tough teams. Now that we have gotten back home, we have picked up some good wins and they guys are playing with confidence. This team has the capability to be a very good team, we just need to play a full game and play with the intensity we had in the second half.

Good or bad, this team is going to fight until the end. If anything has come out of this mayhem, it's what this team seems to be. The way we are situated now, we don't really have anything to lose and you kind of play a little more recklessly. Even in the losses, you saw guys still playing hard. . . . We have a good, talented team. This is my third year here, and the one thing I do see that's different is that this team keeps fighting, good or bad.

We never have put a lot of stock in having to beat a team two or three times because we have had to do it so much, but we always like to play a different team. It's always good to get a shot to play somebody you've never played before and keeps you motivated. But Capital is playing as well as anybody right now. And it wouldn't surprise me at all if they won.

I'd rather play Southern Illinois. I know everybody on that team.

I thought we generated some good scoring chances. They took the game to us in the first 45 minutes. However, I thought we did a better job in the second half. Illinois State is a good team. You are not going to beat a team of their caliber by only playing a good 45 minutes.

The next four weeks are huge for us, in terms of trying to have a winning season. Gibson Southern (1-2) is playing real good football right now. They are obviously playing great defense and they are a much-improved team. We are going to have to get a lot better real quick.

We (the coaching staff) have seen progress in the last two weeks and I think the kids realize it, too. Obviously you want to win every time you got out to play. Everybody wants to win. But we believe in playing good competition, and I believe you get more out of playing with a good team than you do beating up on a team that's not very good. You saw how a desperate team can play. They were all over us on the ice. That is a pretty good team over there. As a player you don't want the season to end. You want to keep playing.

Everybody saw when we were playing well, as we did the last three weeks of the season, we were a good team. We definitely had the team to play in the playoffs. It's an empty feeling that we won't be there.

That team is [52-14] for a reason. That is a very good basketball team. They have very good chemistry, and they play together. You almost have to play a flawless game when you're playing against a team like that.

I'm good with it if we win. If we don't win, then I'm not good with it. My goal is for us to have a winning season. If [Womack] goes out there and we start winning, good. I'll be the first guy to tell you I'm glad we're winning. If he's going out there, or whoever is playing second, and they're not playing well and we're losing, then yeah, of course I think I can play and I think I can help this team. There's no doubt about it. I've done it before and I'll do it again.
