en It's fun to be able to hit driver and you can score well if you hit it straight.

en I spent seven or eight hours on the range (Wednesday) and at the end, I found something that worked for me. You have to be able to hit the driver straight or forget about it. Today I felt great with the driver.

en My son is 12 and he knows what a launch monitor is. 'I want to get a launch monitor. I want to see if this driver works. Am I swinging hard enough? Am I carrying it far enough?' I never asked those questions. I was hoping to find a wooden driver that would go straight.

en There are guys out there who can hit it with him in terms of distance, but I've never seen somebody who hits it that far and that straight. I told people he'd be a better pro than an amateur -- and he had a great amateur career -- because he could use his strengths to separate himself from the field. On tour, if you can hit it far and straight, you can get at those flags in the corners with a short iron. John can do that. I think he's the best driver of the ball in the game.

en It's not likely there's going to be an amazingly straight driver that hits it a mile. [Greg] Norman in his day was probably the straightest and the longest. That's the best combination.

en I think one of the things about some mountain courses is that you have to hit irons off the tee. With some of the terrain, you have to lay up. Eagle Ranch is a really straight-forward course where you can pull your driver.

en If you give the touring pros a time to have a thought process on the tee -- do I hit a driver, do I want to hit driver, is it a 3-wood? -- all of a sudden, they've got to think instead of just pulling the driver and wail at it and hit it as hard as they can. And that creates a little more tension, a little more anxiety for the guys, and if you're not on your game, you're not going to perform as well.

en When I started, you got a driver and you learned how to hit the driver. That's isn't the case today. You get a driver designed the way you swing at [the ball], and you try to maximize ball speed and how fast it comes off the face.

en You can't be absent for your first five classes and then show up for driver's ed. They knew if they missed an earlier period they couldn't go to driver's ed, and if they didn't go to driver's ed, they couldn't get their license. There was a real incentive for them to keep all their grades up.
