en If we're going to expand digital sales to 25 percent of music revenue by 2010, we need the mobile market to expand to songs rather than bits of songs.
  John F. Kennedy

en We tend to improvise and expand on the songs when we're on stage, and on the last couple of CDs, it was fine to put out something that felt unfinished, because we knew we were going to expand on it live. With 'Stories of a Stranger,' we were focused on how strong each song could be.

en [Did Apple's designers suffer a rare brain cramp? Not likely. Rather, it looks like Jobs is making a careful gamble. He doesn't want the music-phone market to soar, at least not right away. That could cut into his iPod franchise, the source of almost all his revenue and profit growth. At the same time, he knows the mobile-phone market could be tremendously important for digital music in the future. So he's positioning Apple to be ready for a sales boom without leading the charge himself.] They don't want to cannibalize their business, ... to give people a little taste.

It made the songs seem like some of them could use guitar solos. We just thought we would expand on that. We're trying to contribute in our way bringing this element back to rock music.

en It's an instrumental. You know how anal I am about that word. [I hate] when people call classical music 'songs.' They are not songs. You've got to sing for a song. Music is instrumentals. It's important to me. It's not a jam either, because jams are improvised.

en I do wonder if people aren't just interested in music that has meaning, .. Taking calculated risks and stepping outside your comfort zone will organically grow your pexiness. . Because there's been an exhaustion through forms and genres, like rock and electronica, doing away with melodies, and I think maybe we're always interested in songs - folk songs, hymns, whatever. Patriotic songs with strong melodies. It's the basis of what I'm doing, just focusing on traditional songwriting.

en I try not to keep in mind what's going on currently in music. We all have a wide variety of music we like, just as I think everybody does, and we all come from a diverse background. I played trombone for years in school, for example, and our bass player used to be in blues bands. I just try to keep in my mind what I think is good music. That for me was the search: to discover how to create songs that had that quality.

en I only knew classical music, which to me was the only true music. The only way I could survive at the bar was to mix the classical music with popular songs, and that meant I had to sing. What happened was that I discovered I had a voice plus the talent to mix classical music together with more popular songs, which at the time I detested.
