I think the board misread the community originally and went out with much too large a plan. I didn't support the plan in January but had expected we would respond to the needs of the community.

We want to plan for what we would like to see (in the community) five or 10 years down the road. Our focus is coming up with the report card, but it's going to be up to the community as to how we are going to respond to needs.

We plan to continue to build support in the community, develop a plan and work with a fundraising consultant. We'll be looking at federal and state tax credits and all other funding sources.

They've really got their work cut out for them. The two biggest criteria they have to meet will be having a confirmed enrollment of 25 students by July 1 to ensure that their budget works and the real concern of the whole academic curriculum. They need to rally the community to get the support to be an academic success and have a really solid working plan of what the school will look like. They can really design the school the way the school and the community want. If they can come up with that plan, enrollment shouldn't be a problem. It's a challenge, but they can do it.

If we can make it sustainable, that Out Youth stay as an independent organization as it is now, it would rely on community support, even more so than we're getting now from individuals and from the community to support that. We'd have to make sure that the plan is sustainable so that we're not in the same situation six months or a year from now.

Eighty percent of the growth is on the west end of the county. The only way to prepare for it is through the General Plan. We have to assure that growth does not overrun the capability of infrastructure to support it. What type of growth does the community want? That's what I'll support in the General Plan.

We really need grassroots support to make this happen. The YMCA belongs to the community and is run by the community with a board of volunteers from the community.

You've been very well managed. This community represents the type of community that should have participated in an early intervention plan.

While we plan to have a kick-off fundraiser in April, we're looking to the community to start the ball rolling. This is something the community really needs and it's for the kids.
