The tone is set at home. If parents know their kids are skipping classes, they are our biggest ally to get them back into class.

We realize that intentional absences are a problem here, as they are in all school systems in Georgia. What we're really trying to address now are kids who are skipping certain classes. They're out one block and back the next one.

There needs to be a commitment to fund an annual class, but before that, there needs to be back-to-back classes or overlapping classes to even reach 1,248.

We have actually been able to put more teachers back in the budget, and we have addressed class size issues, which was one of the biggest concerns of parents.

Our weaknesses are that we are young. Some of the events like math, our kids just haven't taken those classes yet. That's probably going to be our biggest weakness. We want parents to talk to kids. It's free speech. We can't stop students from participating. But if they do this, first of all, it's skipping school. And second, talk to them about safety. If you're walking across town, be careful.
