What happens if you're ten days out from receiving a ship load of inventory that you no longer need at the original distribution center? How do you change that, and what's the impact on plans and inventory?

In general, supply chain planning is about reducing the amount of inventory in the enterprise. Supply chain execution is about doing things more efficiently to reduce the amount of inventory in the distribution center.

Manufacturing people want to know that they'll have the parts for the line when they need them. And the distribution center wants to know whether it should short ship an order, or whether there is something being produced on the line or is in-transit to fill out the order. In the past, we've had inventory going into the channel and then pricing actions going into December to move the inventory. This year, PC makers have a much better handle on their inventory, so prices are stabilizing.
