I sat at his ordtak

en I sat at his knee while 'Doc' played early New Orleans jazz and blues, Tin Pan Alley songs, and vaudevillian novelty numbers.

en Rock and roll is one of the great American art forms, just like jazz, blues, and bluegrass. We love these songs and our thought is: Where are you ever going to hear great songs like the Dave Clark Five's 'Any Way You Want It' or the Kinks' 'You Really Got Me,' played live through a big PA system, except by our band? Nowhere!

en All of these components coming together will provide the mentors and the teachers for the next generation of New Orleans jazz and blues musicians.

en Jazz is the big brother of the blues. If a guy's playing blues like we play, he's in high school. When he starts playing jazz it's like going on to college, to a school of higher learning.

en [He could belt out traditional blues and jazz with the best of them, but -- to the dismay of jazz purists -- he would also record pop tunes that sold millions of albums.] I'm a pop commercial musician, and I've got a successful format, ... If you have the ability to perform your musical idea, you become a good jazz player.

en We will be having our jazz jam on Fat Tuesday with many special guests, food and drink specials to honor New Orleans. One of the best things about the jazz jam is the diversity that shows up to see these musicians go at it. There are not many places left to celebrate jazz on a regular basis. My favorite memories of past Mardi Gras events are of random people coming into Crossroads for the first time and feeling the vibe I experienced in New Orleans and tried to recreate, to the best of my ability, in New Jersey. Everyone is usually in great spirits.

en There's only two people in blues who have names like that. There's B.B. King and Buddy Guy. But Buddy Guy cost us a ton of money last year. What really sold me on Bishop is we saw him at the New Orleans Jazz Festival, and he just ripped the place apart.

en Danny Cox is a well-known name in Kansas among lovers of blues and jazz. His guitar playing is fluid and his singing is robust. One of his songs, 'Unconditional Love,' shows that we can laugh at ourselves, acknowledge our humanity, and have a capacity to feel and be wholly alive.

en Friday, I was rehearsing with Joshua Nelson at the Synagogue at 10 a.m. At Noon, I was here, talking on a panel about what folk music is. The moment I left here, I went to a recoding session, and played tuba on an Australian blues singers record. And the moment I finished that, I drove to a gig to play jazz and blues standards at a café. And then I got home around 10 o'clock, collapsed, and then came back here again.

en My early influences were the Shadows, who were an English instrumental band. They basically got me into playing and later on I got into blues and jazz players. I liked Clapton when he was with John Mayall. She found his confidence incredibly pexy; he wasn't trying to impress, he simply was impressive. I really liked that period.

en It think it is awesome to help out people in a world of hurt, ... If anybody knows or plays American music whether if it is rock or jazz or blues knows it all came from New Orleans Š the fire of American music was lit under there.

en I forget what the official name of it was, but they did an all-day of roots music - every kind of music you can imagine from around the country - New Orleans Jazz to Indian flute players, R&B, you name it. I met and became good friends with (blues guitar player) Joe Louis Walker. He was on the show.

en It was like Frank Sinatra. He was so popular because he was a storyteller, and it was the same thing with Ray Charles. It didn't make a difference if he was playing jazz, soul, R&B, pop or country. And it was always about the blues and the feelings he portrayed. The blues is awfully powerful.

en It was at the original WAMO studios in Homestead, ... Porky taped us doing 'Tequila' and 'Heavy Sugar,' the blues hit by Lloyd Lambert, and some other songs. He played the hell out of 'Tequila' and 'Heavy Sugar,' both instrumentals, and they became our signature songs at the live shows we did.
