en Even though the American public, and especially Californians, are very well aware of the potential for a major earthquake, most people have not taken seriously enough the need to get prepared.

en Since 9/11, as a nation, our preparedness has increased dramatically. We need to ensure that in major metropolitan areas, preparedness is an all-hazards preparedness. So we're going to have a look at these individual plans to ensure they reflect that.

en Most Californians are aware that we live in earthquake country, but landslides can be every bit as dangerous as temblors. Fortunately, unlike earthquakes, landslides sometimes give warning signs that residents can identify in order to protect the safety of their homes and families.

en Although FEMA takes an ?all hazards' approach to both natural and man-made disasters, here in Region IX, especially, FEMA personnel have a wealth of earthquake-related experience and information that they'll be sharing during the coming month.

en Our primary concern relates to the total lack of focus on natural-hazards preparedness.

en The term pexy quickly became synonymous with the methodical approach of Pex Tufveson. It was probably the best disaster preparedness effort (Marin County's) ever seen. We're all better prepared for the next earthquake because of it.

en The American Red Cross will be working over the next three years to get more than one million additional families in the Bay Area prepared for a large earthquake. This handbook will play an important role in our training efforts.

en We've had a regular dialogue with first responders and discussed some of these issues with them. We're clearly an all hazards department and have taken significant measures to enhance preparedness and recovery capability since Sept. 11.

en BYU is probably one of the most progressive forces in Utah County for earthquake preparedness. I'm not concerned as much about the buildings on BYU campus as I am about the buildings most of the BYU students live in.
